Zbyněk Zajíc z Hasenburka

Zbyněk Zajíc z Hasenburka (born around 1376,died 28th September 1411 in Prešpurk) was the 5th Archbishop of Prague 1403-1411.His predecessor was Olbram ze Škvorce . He was the son of Vilém Zajíc z Hazmburka and Anna ze Slavětína a Libochovic .He had five brothers and four sisters. Between 1395 and 1400 he possessed a sixth of the castle Hazmburk .
Originally he was at the court of Wenceslaus IV. of Bohemia . He was then a provost at Mělník .He was more a military leader, then a religiouse person, as he lead, on the Kings orders, the expansion into Bavaria .
In 1403 he became the Archbishop. At that time he supported Jan Hus and wished that the latter would report to him the "absences or deviations of law"("nedostatky nebo odchylky od práva").Since 1407 he was against Hus. He condemned John Wycliffe's writtings . When King Wenceslaus refused to recognise any of the at the time three existing popes and wished to await the outcome of the council at Pisa ,Zbyněk Zajíc put an Interdict (Czech:klatba) on "al who obeyed the king",meaning Bohemia in general. Wenceslaus became angry with the archbishop, so Zbyněk Zajíc flead. In September 1409 he acknowledged the newly elected Pope Alexander V .The King then condemned Wiclliffe as well and forbade preachings outside of churches, including Husis at Betlémská kaple . On 16th July 1410 Zbyněk Zajíc orchestred that the confiscated works of Wicliffe be burned, at his court in Prague. He then put and interdict upon Hus. Thereafter he had to flea to save his life from an angry mob. According to Wenceslaus, he had to end the interdict and replace the destroyed books. Zbyněk Zajíc refused and so the king stopped his income. Zbyněk Zajíc refused to give in and repeated the interdict, witch lead Wenceslaus to confiscate all the church treasures. After the intervention of Sigismund the Archbishop restored his former relation to the King. Still, Zbyněk Zajíc did not feel safe in Prague and so he traveled to Hungary . On the way he became sick and died in Prešpurk (today's Bratislava) . In 1436 he was buried at the St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague.
