"You Know My Name", performed by Chris Cornell, is the theme song to the 2006 James Bond film, Casino Royale. Cornell wrote it jointly with David Arnold, the soundtrack's composer. The track was leaked onto the Internet on 20 September 2006. It is the first Bond theme to be sung by a male vocalist since 1987's The Living Daylights and is the first since 1983's "All Time High" — the theme to the film Octopussy — to have a title different to the Bond film in which it appears.
Similarly, its lyrics do not contain the words "Casino Royale", though references are made to casino gambling — odds, a hand (of cards; "Try to hide your hand"), diamonds, presumably in the context of cards ("I've seen diamonds cut through harder men"), a "spin of the wheel" — to loyalty ("When the storm arrives, would you be seen with me?") and to betrayal ("The odds will betray you"), other themes from the story, and the coldness of the character of 007 ("Forget how to feel", "The coldest blood runs through my veins", etc.).
Cornell cites Paul McCartney's theme for Live and Let Die and Tom Jones's theme for Thunderball as his main reason for writing this theme.
The theme plays against a synchronised title sequence as with all Bond films before it. However, it eschews the silhouttes of naked women used liberally throughout Maurice Binder's title sequences. Instead, card game symbolism and stylised animated fight sequences (e.g. henchman burst into heart symbols after being attacked by Bond) serve as the backdrop. This sequence, like those of subsequent Bond films starting with 1995's Goldeneye, is designed by Binder's successor Daniel Kleinman.
The leaked version is the one used in the movie. The song is not available on the film's soundtrack CD. A second version with more orchestration was used for the music video and will presumably be available on Cornell's upcoming 2007 solo album. The video for the single premiered on MTV's Making the Video on October 31, 2006.
