[edit] Story
A mysterious floating castle has suddenly appeared over peaceful Yoshi’s Island. Soon after its arrival, kids begin to disappear. Baby Mario, Baby Peach, Baby Wario, Baby Bowser, and Baby DK manage to avoid being kidnapped, but Baby Luigi isn’t so lucky. Now, Yoshi and the five young toddlers must set out on an adventure filled journey to rescue the kids and investigate the ominous castle hovering overhead.
[edit] Features
- The characters in the game are Yoshi, Baby Mario, Baby Peach, Baby DK, Baby Wario, Baby Luigi, Baby Bowser and Kamek.
- The babies that ride on Yoshi are Baby Mario, Baby Peach, Baby Wario, Baby Bowser and Baby DK.
- Yoshi has his classic egg throw, flutter jump, ground pound and tongue moves that first appeared in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island.
- The game's visuals are similar in style to those of Yoshi Touch and Go.
- Like in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island and Yoshi's Story there will be multiple colors of Yoshis.
- Each baby will give the player different powers; Donkey Kong can ram through things and climb on vines, Peach uses a parasol to fly high into the air via wind updrafts, Wario being able to use a magnet to get coins and pull Yoshi towards metal objects, Bowser will breathe fire but prevent Yoshi from eating enemies, and Mario allows Yoshi to dash and defeat enemies by stomping on them. Also, Mario, Wario, Peach, and Bowser all allow Yoshi's eggs to bounce off surfaces.
- Yoshi is once again able to morph into vehicles, such as the helicopter morph, the submarine morph, and the mole tank morph.
- The two screens are used as one tall screen, often showing a part of the level above or below you, such as in Sonic Rush.
- Players can run, glide, climb and fight their way through five worlds, each with eight main levels and a few bonus ones, as Yoshi, gobbling up enemies as they go. As they play through different levels, different babies will join the party. Depending on the baby he is carrying, Yoshi will adopt different abilities. The main gameplay comes swapping between the different babies and using their abilities to defeat foes and advance past obstacles. Each level is also filled with hidden items such as stars, red coins, and character coins, which give players bonuses when they collect them.
- Hidden in every level are flowers, stars, red coins and character coins, so even after players finish the game, the challenge continues.
- Every enemy you encounter will be at the Island Museum, where they will walk around on the top screen. [1]
- All bonus games, except the Drawing mini-game, return
- The worlds 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 have Meadow, Jungle, Water, Snow/sky, lava/cave terrain respectively
[edit] Pre-release
The working title of this game was Yoshi's Island 2. It was originally only announced with Mario, Peach, and Donkey Kong as the babies.
[edit] Reception
- IGN- 8.0 out of 10.[1] It was actually mentioned to be more similar to the original Yoshi's Island for the Super Nintendo than its own game. However, this was not to say the game was bad, just not as original as it could have been.
- GameSpot- 9.1 out of 10.[2] It was praised for keeping enough of the spirit of the original to make it a good sequel, but adding enough new content in level design and gameplay mechanics to make it fresh and original; surpassing the original masterpiece.
- GameSpy - 4 out 5
- GamePro - 4.25 out of 5
- GameDaily - 4.5 out of 5
[edit] Voices
- Yoshi: Kazumi Totaka
- Baby Mario, Baby Wario and Baby Luigi : Charles Martinet
- Baby Peach: Nicole Mills
- Baby Donkey Kong: Takashi Nagasako
- Baby Bowser: Dolores Rogers
[edit] Trivia
- This marks the first appearence of Wario and Donkey Kong as babies.
- There are only 5 worlds, but the secret levels, played by a black Yoshi, and the extra stages, played by a white Yoshi, return.
- World 1-1 is almost identical to World 1-1 ("Make Eggs, Throw Eggs") from the first Yoshi's Island game.
