Yangon Technological University

Yangon Technological University or the Yangon Institute of Technology (YIT) is also known as RIT (Rangoon Institute of Technology). It was the first engineering university in Myanmar. Located in Gyogone, Insein, Yangon, it offers a B.E. Engineering degree, and Masters and Doctorate programs.
After the BEHL (Basic Education High Level) exam (equivalent to O levels in Britain), YTU offers an engineering degree after 6 years of study. At the third year, students are divided according to their interests. There are 11 majors:Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mining Engineering, Metallurgy, Petroleum Engineering, Textile, Aeronautical Engineering options and Architecture. A food diploma is offered by Chemical Engineering.
After the 8888 Uprising, many universities were relocated from the capital of Yangon to rural areas. Today, many cities have GTCs (Government Technology Colleges), formerly known as G.T.I.s (Government Technical Institutes), which offer 2-year engineering courses. Qualified students will enter engineering universities such as the Mandalay Institute of Technology.

- 1924 The Department of Engineering is founded under University of Yangon.
- 1927 It became known as the B.O.C. College.
- 1961 Engineering Faculty B.O.C. was moved to Gyogone, Insein and renamed to Burma Institute of Technology, BIT.
- 1964 Renamed Rangoon Institute of Technology (RIT). This name was well-known due to the 8888 Uprising.
- 1990 Mandalay Institute of Technology (MIT) was established in Mandalay City.
- 1998 The name of the university was changed to Yangon Technological University.

Many alumni and ex-faculty are living and working overseas. YTU ex-students organized the biggest ceremony in Yangon in December 2004, called Saya Puzaw Pwè (Paying Respect to Teachers Ceremony) [1]. The largest overseas group of alumni live in Singapore [2]. The second largest overseas group live in the USA [3]. There is an engineering society [4] in Myanmar organized by the Myanmar Government.
Many YTU graduates migrate to Singapore and continue their study at Singapore Universities NUS and NTU.
