Vladimir Malakhov (dancer)

Vladimir Malakhov (born August 30, 1968 in Kryvyi Rih, Ukraine), is a Principal Dancer with American Ballet Theatre. He began his dance training at the age of four at a small ballet school in the Ukraine where he spent his youngest years. He continued his studies at age ten at the school of the Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow under the tutelage of Peter Pestov, and upon graduation in 1986 joined the Moscow Classical Ballet as that company's youngest principal dancer.
In 1992, Malakhov joined the Vienna State Opera Ballet as a principal artist and later the National Ballet of Canada (1994). In the spring of 1995 he had his debut with the American Ballet Theatre at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City. Since that time, he has been a Principal Dancer with ABT, as well as a Principal Guest Artist in Vienna, Stuttgart and Berlin. His repertory encompasses a wide range, from the major classical ballets to the works of leading choreographers of the 20th Century.

Malakhov's roles with the Moscow Classical Ballet included Adam in Creation of the World, Basil and Gamache in Don Quixote, a leading role in Natalie, Romeo and Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet, Prince Siegfried, Benno, and the Neopolitan Dance in Swan Lake, Albrecht in Giselle, leading roles in Balanchine's Theme and Variations and Kasyan Golezovsky's Narcissus, and many other classical pas de deux. As a guest artist he has danced Lensky in Onegin, the Mazurka in Suite en Blanc, Oberon in A Midsummer Night's Dream, Prince Desire in Sleeping Beauty, and the Prince and the Snow King in The Nutcracker. As a soloist at the Vienna State Opera Ballet in (1992) he danced leading roles in La Fille Mal Gardée, The Nutcracker, Don Quixote, A Midsummer Night's Dream, and Manon.

He has also been the subject of profiles by the Russian Television in "Bravo Malakhov", by the European Cultural Network in "Narcisse, the Dancer Malakhov" and by the CB in "The True Prince". He has also been the subject of two films: Bravo Malakhov! (1991) and Narcise, The Dancer Malakhov (1993).

Malakhov currently holds the directorship of Staatsoper Unter den Linden Ballet in Berlin, Germany while still performing as a guest artist with various ballet companies.
