Viby J
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Viby is a suburb in the southwestern part of Aarhus. The "J" stands for Jutland, as there is another town called Viby on the island of Zealand called Viby Sj. It is primarily a working class area, although many immigrants live in Viby J as well. It's also the home of several educational institutes, such as Viby Amtsgymnasium and Århus Business College, making it a centre of education for its part of the city. It's also the local place for shops, with the shopping centre (picture bottom right) which holds space for a supermarkets, and about 20 other shops.
Viby is known for its taekwondo-club, which has fostered several European Champions, and the motorway E45, which ends rather abruptly.
Viby Torv is one of Århus' southernmost traffic nodes, and although few renovations have been started in this area, the new municipality house off Skanderborgvej is quite striking. There is also a shopping centre in the town, called Vibycenteret.
Viby also houses main editorial office of Jyllands-Posten.
[edit] History
In the time of the Viking Age and early Middle Ages there was a castle in Viby.
In early July 1961, Århus Stiftstidende could announce that:
- 100 acres (0.4 km²) of land were to be designated for industry;
- 1800 new flats were to be built;
- The centre would be freshened up to include a 10 storeys tall hotel, and a shopping centre;
- Two new schools and a church would be constructed;
- Road expansions would be made.
The expansions were intended to increase the population from the (at that time) current 16,000 to 50,000.
In 1970, the new shopping centre was taken into use. It had ended up costing about £4 million, instead of the originally estimated £1.85 million.
