University of Calgary Students' Union

The University of Calgary Students' Union is the collective voice of the 23,000 undergraduate students at the University of Calgary. Every Undergraduate registered at the University of Calgary is a member of the Students' Union by virtue of paying tuition and fees. The Students' Union is a multifacted organization serving as part student government, part lobby group, and part business. Students are elected to serve on the Students' Union for one year following elections held in the second week of February.

Federally, the University of Calgary Students' Union participates in the Canadian Alliance of Students Associations and provincially, they are a member of the Council of Alberta University Students.

[edit] Student Government
The Students' Union (SU) is governed by a 21-member Students' Legislative Council (SLC), which is elected from the entire student body each February. The council consists of five executive members: a president and four vice-presidents, who are all full-time employees of the Students' Union, and 16 commissioners. The vice-presidents and commissioners are divided into four commissions: Academic, External, Events, and Operations & Finance. The Club Committee Chair is also a non-voting member of the SLC, and is elected each year by the Clubs sanctioned by the Students' Union.

The President of the Union is responsible for ensuring that the Students' Union runs smoothly and reflects the attitudes of University of Calgary students. He or she acts as a spokesperson for the Students' Union and ensures that all decisions made by SLC, SAA and executive cabinet are implemented by representing students on many University committees and boards.
The current President is Emily Wyatt.
[edit] Executive cabinet
The Executive Cabinet is made up of the President, the 4 Vice-Presidents, and two appointed commsisoners of the Student Legisaltive Council. The Executive Cabinet is empowered with the day to day operations of the Students' Union including the managing of MacEwan Student Centre and all human resource issues.
The current VPs are Shannon O'Connor (Academic), Julie Labonte (External), Eric Jablonski (Events) and Cody Wagner (Operations and Finance).
[edit] The Students' Academic Assembly (SAA)
The Students' Academic Assembly includes 13 elected Faculty Representatives (one from each faculty) as well as the four Academic Commissioners & VP Academic. The SAA represents students on many University committees, while providing academic assistance through workshops and tutor referrals. The SAA is also available to assist students with academic grievances and appeals.

The External Commission represents students to all bodies outside the Students' Union. This includes dealing with the University administration, other students' unions, and all levels of government on issues like tuition, student loans, transit, daycare and housing.

[edit] Events commission
The Events Commission is responsible for much of the social life on campus. They plan and coordinate a large number of events and activities during the year. This includes awareness weeks, Cinemania, Wired Wednesdays, and special parties such as Bermuda Shorts Day. They are also responsible for health and safety issues on campus, including acting as the liaison for the Safewalk program.

[edit] Operations & Finance commission
The Operations & Finance Commission is responsible for managing the financial health of the Students' Union. The commission is also responsible for the overall coordination of a comprehensive health and dental insurance plan for students as well as dispersing Academic and Non-Academic Travel and Conference Funding. The Students' Union represents students on campus organizations such as NUTV, CJSW, The Gauntlet, Student Legal Assistance, Refugee Student Board, and the Accessibility Levy Board.
[edit] Operations
The Students' Union executive oversees an annual budget of over $12 million, $25 million in assets, and a staff of 55 full time employess. The base of operations for the Students' Union is located at the heart of the UofC campus in the MacEwan Student Centre, which is in actuality three separate buildings under one roof. Each year the SU donates numerous scholarships and bursaries to students, and since 1996 has awarded almost $8 million to over 10,000 recipients. The Students' Union owns and operates a full-service restaurant and bar "the Den and Black Lounge", the campus copy centre "Bound and Copied", the campus volunteer centre, a convenience store, the Campus Food Bank, a conference and event centre, and the "Mac Hall" concert facilties (opened in 2001). Additional servcies include the online housing registry, campus lost and found, travel and conferance funding, campus "Safewalk", the Students'Union Student Rights Advisor, 160 student clubs, various awareness weeks, "Cinemania", and the time-honoured end-of-year-crasher "Bermuda Shorts Day".
