University of Advancing Technology (UAT) is a for-profit institution of higher education located in Tempe, Arizona as a single campus. Founded in 1983, UAT is oriented as a high tech university with multiple areas of study in highly technical focuses, though retains important liberal arts requirements such as advanced English, Science, and Math. Typically confused as a technical or vocational school, its general education is comparable to typical universities such as Arizona State University, although way more specialized such as integrating students concentration in their general education requirements. It also offers unique core classes (ex. Information Research Strategies, Technology and Society, Project Management, Intellectual Property Law) and robust general education classes (ex. Psychology, Physics, Biology, Calculus). Many faculty are leaders in their field specialty and have robust credentials.

The University of Advancing Technology is a private college dedicated to advancing technology both in practice and in theory. They serve their student body by fostering knowledge, creation, and academic excellence in an environment that embraces the richness and diversity of modern technology. They teach students how technology has shaped the world so that they may be part of its evolution. Their combination of research, scholarship and application creates technically adept graduates who are equally at home in academia and the working world, and who are valued by both.

Also "UAT-Online" the online college.

This institution offers Associate's, Bachelor's and Master's degrees as well as online education. The school is a private institution with well over a thousand students.

The University’s programs were first accredited in 1987 by ACECT at the diploma and occupational associate’s level. At the time, UAT was known as the CAD Institute and offered classes in Computer Aided Drafting. As the quality of its programs continued to grow, the University converted to its current accrediting body, the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS), in 1992 for recognition at the junior college level. Later that year, the University applied to ACICS to be a Senior College candidate and was granted the opportunity in 1996. That same year, the CAD Institute began offering educational programs outside the CAD focus. This first non-CAD program was extremely successful and grew into UAT’s Multimedia College.

The CAD Institute name was retired in August 1996, and the college was renamed the University of Advancing Computer Technology (UACT). In 1997, UACT launched its Software Engineering program. In 1998, UACT moved to the present campus located in Tempe, Arizona. Also, in 1998, UACT received approval from ACICS to offer a Master of Science in Technology degree. In 2000, it received approval to offer online courses.

The University of Advancing Computer Technology removed the word “computer” from its name in 2002 as a reflection of the notion that “computer technology” has evolved beyond the personal computer to encompass all devices that communicate, manage information and provide connections through all media, including the Internet. ^[1]

The current accreditation is at the national level and is accrediated by the ACICS from the U.S. Department of Education. As of 2006 they are working towards the regional level accreditation from NCA (North Central Association). They are in the final year of the multi-year process of accreditation and on 10/16/2006 they have their last formal visit from the NCA which may lead to its accreditation this year. Their Information Assurance Program meets federal standards by the National Security Agency.

Also hosts many technology based groups throughout the Phoenix area and is host of the "TechForum" in which they are "three years ahead of the curve"

In 2003, a group of students from the UAT Web Club won the Governor's Tourism Award for Web Marketing/Technical Marketing for their work on improving and updating the website for the Boyce-Thompson Arboretum.
