[edit] Roads and Bridges

Macau has 321 kilometers of public roads.

  • Two highway bridges link Macau to Zhuhai, the most recent of which, the 1.3-kilometer-long, six-lane Lotus Bridge, opened in December 1999.
  • Three bridges link peninsular Macau with Taipa. The first, a 2.6 kilometer-long highway bridge, Ponte Macau-Taipa, was completed in 1974; the second, Ponte De Amizade, was completed in 1994 to serve the new Macau International Airport, is 4.4 kilometers long and four lanes wide. A third bridge, Ponte Sai Van, has been completed in 2004 to link Taipa and Macau Peninsula at Sai Van.
  • An eight-kilometre-long dual-lane highway links the airport and the Zhuhai border crossing.
  • Taipa is connected to Coloane with a 2.2-kilometer-long causeway.

Moreover, a 38-kilometer-long connector has been proposed to link Macau and Zhuhai with Shenzhen and Hong Kong, see Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge.

Also, traffic in Macau travels on the left side of the road, like in Hong Kong, but unlike mainland China.

[edit] Tunnel

Several Chinese joint ventures have submitted proposals to build a tunnel between the Macau peninsula and Taipa, construction of which is expected to begin in October 2006 and end in 2009. The proposals vary between 1.5 and 2.3 billion patacas and construction deadlines will be needed to take 2 and half or up to 3 years. The tunnel, which will be 1.7 kilometers long, will bring the total number of bridges between the Macau peninsula and Taipa to four, three of which are bridges built respectively in the 1970s, 1990s and more recently after administration of the region was transferred from Portugal to China. The measures now being taken by the MSAR government to improve Macau’s road infrastructures in order to boost integration in the Great Pearl River Delta region.

[edit] Sea Transportation

Jetfoils, turbo catamarans, and catamarans operate between the Macau Maritime Terminal and Hong Kong (Central or Kowloon, depending on type of craft). The trip between Macau and Hong Kong takes between 55 and 70 minutes depending on the type of craft. About 150 trips per day are made between Macau and Hong Kong. The Macau Maritime Terminal is located on the east shore of the Macau Peninsula (Macau outer harbor). The Macau Container Port, located near the Macau International Airport, was opened in 1991. Vessels leaving the port provide multiple daily round trips to Hong Kong and regular container ship service to Taiwan, Singapore, and to Chinese ports within the Zhujiang estuary. Macau's shallow harbor and channels, however, limit the size and number of ships that can enter the port.

[edit] Air Transportation

The Macau International Airport opened in December 1995 on reclaimed land on the east side of Taipa. It handles commercial and general aviation and accommodates all major aircraft up to Boeing 747-400s. There are two offshore runways (3,285 meters and 3,360 meters) and one taxiway (1,460 meters). Up to 6 million passengers per year capacity is available. Air Macau (established 1994 with 51 percent ownership by China) and more than twenty other airlines provide international flights to and from Singapore, Manila, Bangkok, Pyongyang, Anchorage, and Los Angeles; and domestic flights to and from Taiwan (Taipei and Kaohsiung), Beijing, Chongqing, Fuzhou, Guilin, Haikou, Kunming, Nanjing, Ningbo, Sanya, Shanghai, Wuhan, Xiamen, Xi'an, and ZhengzhouAround 200 flights are scheduled per week. Helicopter service is available every 30 minutes during the day from the Macau Maritime Terminal to central Hong Kong.

It was the first time for Macau International Airport [1] in 2004 reached the Top-100 (placed 82nd) in global standard for the total volume of goods transportation. In 2003, the airport has altogether processed 140,000 tons of cargo and in 2004, 220,000 tons of cargo. The capacity of cargos processing in the airport largely grew more than 56%. In 2005 Macau International Airport had the honor to receive the prize of best airport in the Asian and Pacific area; again in 2006 received the remarkable prize of global air freight.

In order to go together the need of public and give satisfaction for those passengers who would like to go to other places of Zhujiang Delta; or to transfer to the mainland in a more convenient way, the policy of Two Customs, One Checkpoint (or AIR-TO-LAND Flow Express Bus - Two Customs, One Checkpoint) was introduced by Macau International Airport. Passenger can request the "Express Link" service at the check-in counter of that airline . When arriving at Macau International Airport, they may follow the "Express Link" (i.e. signages to gate No.8) for registration and boarding the Air-to-Land transfer. No immigration and customs procedure are required for passengers taking Express Bus until the final destination have been reached.

[edit] Public Transportation

Macau's public transportation system is primarily served through bus. There are two bus companies that are currently operating: Transportes Colectivos de Macau and Transmac. The network of routes serve various locations within Macau quite efficiently. There is a proposal for a light rail system called Macao Light Transit System.

There is no rail transport in Macau, but there is a proposal to link Macau by extending the Guangzhou Railway to Cotai through Hengqin Island was proposed. [1]
