Tongaat, KwaZulu-Natal

Tongaat is a sugarcane growing town in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa that is situated on the banks of the Tongati River north of Durban and now forms part of eThekwini, the Greater Durban Metropoliton (LATITUDE: -29.587819 LONGITUDE: 31.104174). Tongaat is situated about 37km north of Durban and 28km south of Stanger. Tongaat was established in 1945 and its name was corrupted from the rivers name, Tongati, which itself is named after the Zulu word for the Strychnos mackenii trees that flourish on its banks.
The town is the centre for the Tongaat-Hullett Sugar Limited and the Moreland Molasses Companies. Tongaat-Hullett Sugar is not only producing sugarcane but it is increasingly seeing the opportunities in environmentally sustainable energy generation from sugar cane. The company continues to explore the co-generation of electricity and the expansion of ethanol production for use as a bio-fuel-initiatives that are certain to grow in significance given sugar cane's sustainable and renewable properties. see also: [1] Tongaat-Hullett Sugar believes that as a major business entity operating nationally and internationally, it has a meaningful contribution to make to the economic and the social development of South Africa and its people. Tongaat-Hullett Sugar, Hullett Alluminium, African Products and Moreland have introduced exciting initiatives in the areas of employment, training and development, social investment and health and safety. In June 2001; during Parliament, President Thabo Mbeki specifically mentioned the Tongaat-Hullett Group as one of the companies that has done tremendous work in the areas of Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) and employment equity; and read out statistics to illusttrate these achievements.
Tongaat also host the Tongaat brach of the APOSTOLIC FAITH MISSION OF SOUTH AFRICA. The church was found by Rev. John G. Lake. Tongaat consists of many churches. One of these churches is called the Tongaat South Methodist Church. This church was opened on 26 September 1979. The church is currently being run for the 27th year.
Tongaat consists of one hospital. The name of the hospital is Victoria hospital. It opened 19 years ago in the year of 1987.
