Tjele municipality

Tjele municipality is a municipality (Danish, kommune) in Viborg County on the Jutland peninsula in northern Denmark. The municipality covers an area of 273 km², and has a total population of 8,641 (2005). Its mayor is Anna Margrethe Kaalund.
The main town and the site of its municipal council is the town of Ørum.
Neighboring municipalities are Purhus to the east, Hobro and Møldrup to the north, Viborg to the west, and Bjerringbro to the south.
By January 1, 2007 Tjele municipality will cease to exist, as the result of Kommunalreformen ("The Municipality Reform" of 2007). It will be merged, with Bjerringbro, Fjends, Karup, Møldrup, and Viborg municipalities to form an enlarged Viborg municipality. This will create a municipality with an area of 1,390 km² and a total population of 88,945 (2005). The municipality will belong to the new Region Midtjylland ("Mid-Jutland Region").
