Thoothukudi District

Thoothukudi District, also known as Tuticorin District, is a district of Tamil Nadu state in southern India. Thoothukudi (Tuticorin) is the district headquarters. It had a population of 1,572,273 as of 2001. It is 42.28% urbanised. [1]. This is one of the Ayyavazhi populated districts of Tamil Nadu.

Thoothukudi District is situated in the extreme south-eastern corner of Tamil Nadu. It is bounded on the north by the districts of Tirunelveli, Virudhunagar, and Ramanathapuram, on the east and south-east by Gulf of Mannar and on the west and south-west by Tirunelveli District. Total area of this district is 4621 square kilometres and the administrative headquarters is an urban agglomeration and also one of the taluk headquarters within the district.

In 1986, Tirunelveli district was split into Chidambaranar (present-day Thoothukudi) and Nellai-Kattabomman (later Tirunelveli-Kattabomman, present-day Tirunelveli) districts.

Due to port facility in the city (tuticorin port trust) provides industries to be set up in the city. industries in tuticorin are:
- TTPS (tuticorin thermal power station)
- SPIC
- TAC (tuticorin alkali chemicals)
- HWP (heavy water plant)
- sterlite (mainly copper)
apart from this major occupation in tuticorin is fishing industries.sea foods industries has been set up at large in the city. tuticorin is well known for pearl diving that is why city is called as pearl city.
the location of the port is well sheltered from cyclones&storms...because of srilanka location to its east....

- city has one of the oldest church called PANIMAYA MATHA KOIL.
- city has a beautiful BEACH located in port area.
- city has a fisheries college lab having rare sea species present.
- TIRUCHENDUR which is well known for the Avatharappathi and LORD MURUGA temple in the state (takes 1 hour journey by road).
- tamil poet BHARATHIYAR birth place ETTAYAPURAM. (located in madurai-tuticorin highway NH-45B)
