The Pie is the seventy-nineth episode of the NBC sitcom Seinfeld. This was the 15th episode for the 5th season. It aired on February 17, 1994.
[edit] Plot
Jerry is miffed after his girlfriend Audrey elects not to share a piece of pie with him; when later he eats at her father's restaurant, he becomes concerned about food preparation, as her father does not wash his hands after coming out of the restroom. This causes him to reject a slice of her father's pizza in the same way that Audrey rejected the pie.
Elaine and George visit an upmarket clothing store. Elaine is shocked to discover that one of the store's mannequins looks just like her and wants to find out who made it, but George is more interested in an expensive suit that will shortly be on sale at half price.
George soon becomes embroiled in a battle of wits with another customer who is also interested in the suit. George attempts to hide the suit so the other customer will not find it on the sale day. While doing so, he is momentarily distracted by the sight of the "Elaine" mannequin naked.
Meanwhile Kramer has developed a terrible itch in his back, but has found relief at the hands of a new girlfriend with long fingernails. A few days later the itch heals and he plans to break up with her.
Elaine and Jerry visit the clothing store and find the "Elaine" mannequin posed in a spanking tableau with another mannequin. Elaine is so furious that she steals the mannequin.
On the day of the sale George outwits his rival and buys the suit, but his rival swears revenge. George wears the suit to a job interview but becomes concerned that he might be rejected because the suit makes a noise when he moves.
Kramer breaks up with his girlfriend by telling her that the mannequin (now in Jerry's car) is his new girlfriend. Kramer goes out to the car and pretends to make out with the mannequin, which falls apart in his hands.
George's prospective employer takes him to dinner with some of his employees. He does not reject George because the suit is noisy, but insists that George eats with him. But George has seen that the chef is his rival for the suit. Fearing that the chef will have tampered with the food, George rejects it in the same way that Audrey rejected the pie. As a result George does not get the job, but avoids becoming violently ill like the others.
Meanwhile, Audrey's father is arrested by a hygiene standards officer.
[edit] Trivia
- In the closing scene we see that the mannequin was designed by the man who became obsessed with Elaine in The Cigar Store Indian.
- The incident with the pie was based on a real-life incident as told to the writers by the real Jerry Seinfeld.
- Two actors who appeared in this episode, already appeared on the show in a different role. Suzanne Snyder, who played Audrey, played Eva (the cute Nazi chick) in season 3's "The Limo." Christine Dunford, who played "Saleswoman", played Lesile ("George's worst date of his life") in season 2's "The Baby Shower."
[edit] Quotes
- Jerry: (Elaine walks in) I'm sorry. But there's no reson for her not to taste that pie.
- Elaine: Who wouldn't taste the pie?
- Jerry: Audrey.
- Elaine: Dump her.
- Kramer: It's uncanny! It's like they chopped off your arms and legs, dipped you in plastic, then screwed you all back together again, and stuck you on a pedestal. It's really quite exquisite.
- Elaine: (staring at the mannequin in disbelief) It looks exactly like me.
- George: It's like some pod landed from another planet and took your body. Don't fall alseep, Elaine.
- Jerry: Um, excuse me. I couldn't help but notice that you offered her a piece of your pie.
- Woman #1: That's right.
- Jerry: (to the other woman) And you waved it away?
- Woman #2: Right.
- Jerry: Did you give her a reason?
- Woman #2: Yes. I was full.
- Jerry: You were full. So you gave a reason. You didn't just shake your head.
- Woman #2: (confused) No. I'm not a psycho.
- Jerry: Exactly. You're not a psycho. You've been very helpful. Thank you very much. Allow me to leave the tip. (puts money on their table and goes back to sit with Elaine and Kramer) Well, I think we've proven who the psycho is.
- Elaine: We certainly have.
- Jerry: This woman is bending my mind into a pretzel!
- Elaine: (gasps at seeing her look-alike mannequin in a "naughty" pose)
- Jerry: Boy, the resemblance is uncanny.
- Jerry: (glances at Elaine & the mannequin sitting next to each other in the car) I don't know about you, but I'm getting a hankering for some Doublemint gum.
