The Lilac Domino

The Lilac Domino is an operetta in three acts, first performed at Leipzig on February 3, 1912. The libretto is by Emmerich von Gatti and Béla Jenbach, with music by Charles Cuvillier. The original German title was Der lila Domino.
The piece later played on Broadway in 1914 in an English version by Harry and Robert B. Smith with additional songs by Howard Carr and Donovan Parsons. It opened at the 44th Street Theatre on October 28 and ran for 109 performances. This version was then performed in London in 1918, opening at the Empire Theatre on February 21 and running for a remarkable 747 performances -- one of the longest runs for any piece of musical theatre up to that time.
There was also a film version in 1937 and a revised theatre version in English by H. F. Maltby in 1953.

The plot concerns three young men who have lost heavily at cards. They agree that one must seek a wealthy bride in order to repay their gambling debts. The Lilac Domino tells how they fare in their quest.
