The Juliana Theory was an alternative rock, indie, second wave emocore and post hardcore quintet from Greensburg and Latrobe, Pennsylvania.

The Juliana Theory formed in 1997 by Joshua Fiedler and Neil Hebrank (formerly of the band Noisome) along with Chad Monticue (former singer for Pensive) and Jermiah Momper. Brett Detar (a former guitarist for Zao and Pensive) soon joined ranks as their singer. After contributing a significant amount of songwriting that resulted in defining their early style, Momper departed from the band after the release of Understand This is a Dream, the band's first full-length album for Tooth & Nail Records. Joshua Kosker, originally of Dawson High, joined The Juliana Theory full time when Dawson High went on an indefinite hiatus. The band then recorded their second full-length album Emotion is Dead and the EP Music From Another Room. Drummer Neil Hebrank was replaced by Josh "Chip" Walters before the recording of Love, the band's third-full length album.
The band then parted ways with Epic Records and signed a deal with Rykodisc. In a MySpace blog written by Detar, he explains that after a change in management and direction of the label, "...at the last second we wormed our way out of the deal and headed into the studio with our own funds and with the help of Josh, our manager." Detar subsequently began his own label affiliated with Abacus Recordings called Paper Fist (in reference to The Juliana Theory song, "To the Tune of 5000 Screaming Children"). He also did a side project with Chris Evenson of Sense Field called Belasana and released a song called "Bittersweet Eve" on the compilation Maybe This Christmas Tree.
On February 9, 2006, The Juliana Theory announced it had broken up as a band, citing difficulties with record labels in addition to poor CD sales and a dwindling fanbase.

In late 2005 the band teamed up with InstantLive to unofficially release 5 limited edition concert recordings from the 2005 Deadbeat Sweatheartbeat tour. The following shows were recorded live and made available on CD in limited editions:

- Contrary to popular belief, there is no significance to the name The Juliana Theory.
- The Juliana Theory is sponsored by ESP Guitars; their guitarists play on Bogner combo amps.
- Brett Detar is a big fan of Mario Lemieux, the Pittsburgh Penguins, and Johnny Cash.
- Despite the fact that Brett Detar was formerly in the Christian metalcore band Zao, the band had never claimed to be a Christian rock band due to the fact that not all of the members were Christians.
- The Juliana Theory's 2003 album, Love, was produced by Jerry Harrison of Talking Heads.
- Brett Detar is a playable character in the popular flash game series, Emogame.
- Neil Hebrank is now in a new rock band, Confident Years. [1]
- Chad Alan was the only member never to have missed a performance.
