The Girl

The Girl (first publication 1978) is a novel set during Prohibition and chronicles the development of a young woman from a naive small-town girl into an empowered prostitute and mother.
Written during the McCarthy era, the book was blacklisted for having alleged Communist ideas. In the 1970's Le Sueur modified the story, making Girl's baby a girl instead of a boy, and feminists' interest in the book led to a revival of its popularity in the 1970's.
