The District was a television crime drama which aired on CBS from October 7, 2000 to May 1, 2004. The show follows the work and personal life of the chief of Washington, D.C.'s Metropolitan Police Department, better known internationally as the MPD. The show marked Coach star Craig T. Nelson's return to TV, as well as future Save the Last Dance star Sean Patrick Thomas's first major role.
The District was inspired by real-life experience of former New York Deputy Police Commissioner Jack Maple who also created the show along with Terry George.

In 2001, Jean Smart was nominated for an Emmy Award for "Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series" for her role as "Sherry Regan".
Primary filming was in Los Angeles, with some location shooting in Washington.
In March 2003, original cast member Lynne Thigpen died at her Marina del Rey, California home at age 54 of a cerebral hemorrhage. The show paid tribute to her character in the third season finale.
