Talk:The world's most southern
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Isn't the McDonalds in Invercargill, New Zealand the southern most McDonalds in the world? when you drive into Invercargill theres a big sign saying something like "Visit the Southern most McDonalds in the world!" Lossenelin 05:14, 24 June 2006 (UTC)
The difficulty with this article and the similar The world's most northern is how anyone knows whether it is accurate. Where did all this information come from? --Bduke 04:39, 23 January 2006 (UTC)
Editors, often anon ones, continue to keep adding items without sourcing any reference, so I have added the {{not verified}} tag. --Bduke 00:16, 9 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Questions
Anyone knows whether there is a Post Office in Patriot Hills? At Villa Las Estrellas (Chilean settlement), there is a bank, a post office, a primary school and even a GSM network. Most probably some Argentinian settlement has similar services but I don't know where is souther. Exceptuating Antarctica, there are a post office, bank, schools (high school), munipalicity, etc at Puerto Williams, in the Navarino Island.
I guessed there should be a proper supermarket on Ushuaia or Rio Grande (according population numbers). Otherwise, it is on Punta Arenas.
Patriot Hills facilities counts as hotel?

[edit] Chile-related information is incorrect
Most of the information related to Chile is seriously incorrect; as numerous media sources clearly state, the world's most southern university and public library are in Ushuaia, Argentina. I'll include my sources on every edit, see the history page for more details. Cheers, —For the Nation's Honour (velox et mortifer) 02:01, 2 September 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Move proposal
Oppose It has been proposed that this article be moved to "The world's most southerly". I don't think it's necessary. "Southern" is acceptable here too; If the ambiguity is causing confusion (which I don't believe it is), "The world's southernmost" would be a better move. -- JHunterJ 17:08, 23 October 2006 (UTC)
Oppose "southerly": Our precisian is inventing his grammar; although this may be a AE/BE dispute again (in which case it should be ignored). See, for example, this site calling Alaska the nation's "most northern, western, and eastern State." Septentrionalis 20:20, 23 October 2006 (UTC)
Oppose - As correctly guessed above, 1) this is a UK/US difference or actually only preference and 2) both "the southernmost" and "the most southern" are perfectly acceptable in UK English too.
Lots of time is wasted on Wikipedia by unnecessary proposals and discussions that could be easily avoided by a short look into at least one UK and US dictionary or grammar. At the very least, one should do some Google searches before claiming that someone else's English is incorrect. Google results can only be used to prove that something is better if one takes a close look at the individual links because Google frequencies are often misleading, but they can be used to disprove the typical claims made by amateur "linguists" on WP that something doesn't exist or is incorrect just because it doesn't exist in the dialect of the amateur.

As there seems to be no consensus for the requested move after more than 5 days, I'm removing the listing from WP:RM. Cheers. -GTBacchus(talk) 22:55, 30 October 2006 (UTC)
