Thaksinocracy

Thaksinocracy (Thai: ระบอบทักษิณ Rabob Thaksin) is the term created by Dr. Teerayut Bunmee from the Faculty of Sociology, Thammasat University, one of the critics of Thaksin Shinawatra. The meaning of Thaksinocracy is the combination of "Thaksin" + "Democracy." In a sense of corporation merger, it is like the system of Thaksin merge with the system of Democracy. In a normal merger, the company who has more value and will control more shares will have its name come first, and the company who has minor shares will have its name following (for example: JP Morgan Chase). The result is the system that has an image of full democracy but run by the absolute power of Thaksin. Prof. Kaewsant Atipoh, senator and one of the top law professor in the country, called it "Padejkarn Jumlang" or Camouflaged Dictatorship.

For the people who support Thaksin Shinawatra, the term "Thaksinocracy" is an insult. They believe that the people who are using it are only "jealous" of the success of Thaksin. For example: in the case of Abhisit Vejajiva, the leader of Democratic Party who uses this term often, Thaksin supporters always tease him with the word “Rabob Abhisit” or “Abisitocracy”. They believed that Abhisit is far less talented than Thaksin. In the case of another harsh critic, such as “Sondhi Limthongkul”, they also tease him with “Rabob Sonthi” or “Sonthiocracy”.

However, for the anti-Thaksin campaign organized by People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD), the meaning of Rabob Thaksin or Thaksinocracy has a much more complicated meaning and content rather than just an insult word towards Thaksin.

One of PAD goal when it was formed is to eliminate Thaksinocracy from Thailand.

Professor Kaewsant Adhipothi mentioned in his book “Stop Thaksinocracy” that there are five characteristics of Thaksinocracy:

Hijack the Constitution
Control and distort the Democracy
Replace Nationalism with Materialism
Extremely Corrupted
End peace and justice of the land
