Taman Melawati

Taman Melawati is a self-contained town within the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur. It is located between the districts of Ampang and Gombak on the Klang Valley border. This town is administrated by Majlis Perbandaran Ampang Jaya (MPAJ). Despite being surrounded by forest reserves, Taman Melawati is strategically located 10 minutes' drive away from Kuala Lumpur city centre, provided there is no traffic jam.
Most of the people choose to stay in Taman Melawati because there are many facilities available, yet it is located away from the fast-paced city centre. It can be accessed by Rapid KL buses (303 from Lembah Keramat, 304 from Wangsa Maju LRT station) and Len Seng bus 191 from Masjid Jamek. Taxis are also easily available. Taman Melawati is strategically located along the Middle Ring Road 2 (MRR2) and 5 kilometres away from the Ampang-Kuala Lumpur Elevated Highway (AKLEH) which connects to the city centre.
There is a clubhouse, Kelab Century Paradise, in Taman Melawati. The International School of Kuala Lumpur (Elementary Campus) and Malaysia's finest art college, Malaysian Institute of Art (MIA), are located in this town. Zoo Negara, the national zoo, is also located nearby.
Taman Melawati has many clear rivers and green hills which makes it an ideal spot for fishing, trekking and picnicking. One of the hills, Bukit Tapur, is a popular hiking spot. The peak has a good view of the Klang Valley Dam, which is located within this area. It is also known as Klang Gates Ridge, the oldest quartz ridge in the world. Other hills offer beautiful views of the Kuala Lumpur skyline. Retirees prefer to live in the green scenery of Taman Melawati. In the morning, there will be many species of birds flying around from the zoo. It is an unique sight that can rarely be seen around Kuala Lumpur.
Although development is rapidly taking place, this area still has a natural beauty to it. This peaceful town is considered to be an ideal place to live. In fact, it is a great place to jog or take a stroll as there is not much traffic. It is home to many rich and famous Malaysian people, such as Yusof Haslam and Daim Zainuddin, the former Finance Minister of Malaysia. If you happen to go to the town centre, chances of stumbling upon a celebrity is high. Most of the local Malay dramas and movies are shot in Taman Melawati because of the beautiful scenery and peaceful environment, as well as less traffic compared to other places surrounding Kuala Lumpur.
There are many restaurants found in Taman Melawati, such as Sakura Kristal, Calypso Cafe and Deen, as well as fast food chains KFC and Domino's Pizza. Many different types of food can be found at the 'medan selera' or food court. The 'pasar malam' or night market is open every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday nights.

Since this town is on the north-east Klang Valley border, there is confusion whether Taman Melawati is officially under Kuala Lumpur or Selangor state. To clarify this issue, authorities have placed two boards stating 'Sempadan Daerah Kuala Lumpur' or 'Kuala Lumpur District Border', one along Jalan Klang Gate and the other near the Taman Melawati exit of Middle Ring Road 2 (MRR2). This town's postal code (53100) also confirms that Taman Melawati is officially under Kuala Lumpur and it can be found in the official Kuala Lumpur map.
