Sweeney Todd is a film adaptation of the Stephen Sondheim musical.

Tim Burton will direct the film, from John Logan's writing the screenplay. Johnny Depp will play the murderous barber Sweeney Todd. Helena Bonham Carter and Sacha Baron Cohen [1] will co-star. The film will start shooting on February 5, 2007^{[citation needed]}, and is being considered for a release later that same year.^[1]

Tim Burton had been signed on for the film project in the early 1990s, but he dropped the project after he had difficulty getting it mounted.

In 2004, Sam Mendes was chosen to head a new production. This plan went so far as to allow Sam Mendes to consider Russell Crowe for the main role of Sweeney Todd.

However, 2006, it was announced that Tim Burton would take up the reins for the film.

Reports indicate that Jim Broadbent has left the film adaptation of the musical Hairspray to star in this film.

There has been much fan reaction to the fact that actors untrained in musical theatre have been cast. There is a common belief^{[citation needed]} that Johnny Depp does not have the ability nor the time to gain such ability to sing with the complexity that Sondheim's music demands.

Defenders have argued that Depp sang in John Waters' movie musical Cry-Baby; however, Depp had his singing voice dubbed in that film (with the exception of "King Cry-Baby").

The musical's author Stephen Sondheim was rumoured to have "required" Depp to take a singing test ^[2]. This has since been disproven ^{[citation needed]}.

Depp is rumoured to be receiving coaching from his partner Vanessa Paradis, a singer.
