Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia (not the "West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals") is the court of last resort for the State of West Virginia. Although the West Virginia Constitution allows for an intermediate court of appeals to be created, the Supreme Court provides the only state-based remedy for errors committed by the lower trial courts (called "circuit courts"). The Court's chambers are located in the state capital at Charleston.
The justices of the court are elected to twelve-year terms via staggered, state-wide, partisan elections. In 2004 the State Bar Association was tasked with considering several reform proposals to limit the political nature of the court. It will issue a report before the next election in 2008.
The seats currently held by Justices Maynard and Starcher are up for election in 2008.

Justices as of 2006 are Joseph P. Albright, Brent D. Benjamin, Chief Justice Robin Jean Davis, Elliot E. Maynard, and Larry V. Starcher.
The Chief Justiceship is a rotating office, which changes from one Justice to another each year.
