Sundeved

Sundeved (German:Sundewitt) is a municipality in South Jutland County on the east coast of the Jutland peninsula in south Denmark. The municipality covers an area of 69 km², and has a total population of 5,298 (2005). Its mayor is John Solkær Pedersen.
The main town and the site of its municipal council is the town of Sønderborg, in neighboring Sønderborg municipality. Towns in the municipality include Avnbøl, Ballebro, Blans, Stenderup, Ullerup, Vester Sottrup, and Øster Sottrup.
Sandbjerg Estate, which had belonged for many years to the Dukes of Sønderborg, and then to the Reventlow family, was donated to Aarhus University in 1954
Neighboring municipalities with land connections to the municipality are Sønderborg to the east, Lundtoft to the west, Gråsten to the southwest, and Broager to the south. Neighboring municipality Nordborg to the north on the island of Als is separated from the municipality by Als Fjord, the waterway which separates Als from the Jutland mainland, and which defines the municipality's northern and much of its eastern borders. Much of its southern border is defined by the waters of Flensborg Fjord leading into the Baltic Sea.
Ferry service connects the municipality at the town of Ballebro over Als Fjord to the town of Hardeshøj.
The municipality was created in 1970 as the result a kommunalreform ("Municipality Reform") that merged a number of existing parishes:
By January 1, 2007 Sundeved municipality will cease to exist as the result of Kommunalreformen ("The Municipality Reform" of 2007). It will be combined with existing Augustenborg, Broager, Gråsten, Nordborg, Sydals, and Sønderborg municipalities to form the new Sønderborg municipality. This will create a municipality with an area of 499 km² and a total population of 49,886 (2005). The new municipality will belong to the new Region Syddanmark ("South Denmark Region").
