Steve Hofmeyr

Steve Hofmeyr, is a South African singer, songwriter and actor born on 29 August 1964. After Steve matriculated in 1982 at Grey College, Bloemfontein, Free State Province, he did two years compulsory Army and Border duty, and then went to Pretoria Technikon Drama School. Steve married actress Natasha Sutherland in 1998 and had a son, Sebastian, born 13 December 2001.

In 1997 he broke onto the international music scene when he recorded the duet You Don’t Bring Me Flowers with Belgian superstar Dana Winner for his album True to You. This track was also recorded in Flemish and charted in Belgium at No 2 in the Top 100. Dana and Steve performed together on stage to sold-out shows in both Belgium and South Africa. One of his self-penned songs is currently a hit for her in Europe.

He toured South Africa in 2001 with Beautiful Noise the story and music of Neil Diamond and the release of his new CD with the same title. The tour was a success, with 224 sold out concerts.

The highlight in Steve's life was when he acted opposite Joan Collins at Sun City Superbowl.

Steve Hofmeyr has in recent years been plagued by controversy regarding his 3 illegitimate children. He has become somewhat locally infamous for having fathered these children out of wedlock, especially in light of his conservative Afrikaans background and social influence. The exact number of his illegitimate children has often been subject to local speculation and has frequently been exaggerated through South African media and humor.

In January 2000, a Pretoria magistrate ordered the attachment of goods to the value of R44588 belonging to singer and actor Steve Hofmeyr after he failed to settle outstanding maintenance fees for one of his three illegitimate children. The court papers said Hofmeyr neglected to comply with certain requirements of a maintenance order, earlier awarded to the child's mother.

Other recent events have brought this situation to a head culminating in Steve Hofmeyr assaulting a journalist, Jan-Jan Joubert, a local editor at the 'Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees' art festival in April 2002.

Recently Steve Hofmeyr started courting rightwing issues and rightwing politicians for the sake of publicity. Whilst his children are raised as English speakers he has embraced Afrikaans political issues such as the changing of names in South Africa. Some of his more inane campaigns includes a boycott against the petroleum distributor Engen for allegedly selling franchises to black people only. The truth of this has been denied by Engen, but no apology has been forthcoming. He has also been disseminating false information about the criminal records of South African members of parliament. The most glaring mistake in his rant the fact that he states that there are 535 members of parliament whilst there are less than 400.
