StarStruck is the first reality-based talent search for teenagers on Philippine television in recent history. The program, which first aired on GMA Network in 2003, was very successful, that it was hailed by critics as the most phenomenal show of 2003. The show's alumni are among of the most popular teen actors in the Philippines today.

The program is now famous for its tagline; Dream, Believe, Survive.

StarStruck recently concluded its third season, with a new batch of promising hopefuls. Its success during its first season spawned or reformatted shows such as Star Circle Quest, and even its own spin-offs, StarStruck Kids and Stage 1: The StarStruck Playhouse, which was created as a daily show for the Final 14 StarStruck contestants.

The reality-based teen actor search StarStruck has the makings of the typical reality show contest: unknown contestants, insulting judges, endless challenges, and all the hype and drama on TV. For this reason, it is often compared to its American counterpart, American Idol.

There will be two ultimate survivors, a male and a female, at the end of every season. The winners are determined by garnering the average of the text and online votes plus the decision of the three members of the StarStruck Council. However in Season 3, from the two ultimate survivors, there will be an Ultimate Sole Survivor, which will earn the winner extra prizes.

[edit] First season (2003-04)

StarStruck was first announced on GMA Network program SOP, where the hosts invited teenagers to audition for the upcoming StarStruck season. Much of the auditions were held at the GMA Network headquarters and at SM malls throughout the Philippines.

The first season of StarStruck was directed by Lino Cayetano, who has studied and taught film in the University of the Philippines, aside from his film and audiovisual communications course in New York Film Academy.

The pilot episode aired on October 27, 2003. Out of thousands who auditioned for a stab at stardom, only 100 were chosen for the first cut. From 100, it was trimmed down to 60, from 60 to 30 and from 30 to the 14 finalists. The Final Fourteen underwent various workshops and trainings in order to develop their personalities, talents, etc. But, the twist is that every week, up to two of the Final 14 may have to say goodbye until only four remain. Those who were eliminated were dubbed as "StarStruck Avengers". The Final Four Survivors will vie for the coveted "Ultimate Survivor" title.

[edit] Hosts

Dingdong Dantes and Nancy Castiglione hosted Starstruck Season 1.

[edit] Council

The judges of the first batch were veteran actor Joey de Leon, movie and TV director Joyce Bernal and Ida Hinares.

[edit] Final Judgment

The winner was announced on a two-hour TV special dubbed "StarStruck Final Judgement" held on February 2, 2004. Araneta Coliseum, the venue of the event was jampacked by thousands of StarStruck fans and supporters. Mark Herras and Jennylyn Mercado were proclaimed Ultimate Survivors and each of them received five-hundred thousand pesos plus exclusive contracts from GMA Network and one-hundred thousand pesos each for the runner-ups (Yasmien Kurdi & Ranier Castillo). The Starstruck Avengers also received exclusive contracts. During the Judgment Day, it was also announced that the Final 14 will be having their own show. The Final Judgment rated 42.8%, impressively high for a late Sunday night telecast.

Stage 1: The Starstruck Playhouse

Because of the StarStruck fever, GMA Network created a new show, Stage 1: The StarStruck Playhouse. The StarStruck test continues on this show where the Final 14 have to prove their staying power in the business. Every week from Mondays to Thursdays, the show presents a miniseries starring the starstruck 1 final 14, this time their acting prowess is put into test. The show already went off the air with high ratings.

Fridays would serve as critical day because the audience will judge their performance for the week through text messaging. An acting award is also given to the survivor who excelled in that week. Stage 1: LIVE! is also somewhat a variety show for the Survivors. If Mondays to Thursdays, they showed their acting skills, during Fridays, they are able to show their dancing, singing and hsoting prowess. The show was hosted by Chynna Ortaleza and Cogie Domingo with Raymond Gutierrez. The show already went off the air with high ratings.

[edit] Second season (2004-05)

It was first aired on October 11, 2004 and ended on February 20, 2005 with a new set of Survivors and a more rigid tests. The same rules were applied in selecting the Ultimate Survivors.

The show primer aired the untold secrets of the first season's Final 14, the life they had before and after StarStruck and the changes StarStruck made into their lives.

[edit] Hosts

The second season was hosted by Dingdong Dantes and StarStruck Kids host Jolina Magdangal.

[edit] Council

The judges for this season were veteran actors Joey de Leon and Christopher de Leon, and director Louie Ignacio

[edit] Innovations for the second season

[edit] Jollibee voting

Aside from voting through text messaging and the internet, fans were also able to vote in Jollibee outlets. A certain amount of purchase was needed in order for a fan to vote. The contestant with the highest number of votes would star in his/her own Jollibee television commercial.

[edit] Survivor Six

This season was the first occurrence where a former eliminated contestant returned to the competition and was named "The Avengers Strike's Back". CJ Muere was eliminated on December 26, 2004 but later replaced Benj Pacia and returned to the contest through a major twist wherein an Avenger will be given the chance to re-enter the contest by emerging with at least fourth-best in cumulative scores among the Survivor Six (Cenon, Reyes, Young, Pacia, Tan, de Jesus). Muere emerged in the top 4, and was reinstated while Pacia was eliminated.

Some viewers did not like this twist for it undermined the rules and regulations of the show. Although, the fans of CJ Muere welcomed his return to the competition and proved to be worthy to be part of the elite Final Four. Muere also got the highest Jollibee votes, thus he starred in a Jollibee commercial.

[edit] Final Judgment

The Final Judgment for the second season were held on February 20, 2005 at the Araneta Coliseum. Ryza Cenon and Mike Tan became the Ultimate Survivors and won the prize of one million pesos each and GMA Network contracts. Likewise, the Avengers were given their own GMA Network contracts.

[edit] Third season (2005-06)

StarStruck Season 3: The Nationwide Invasion started December 2005 and ended on March 12, 2006 (the Final Judgement) airing on Philippine TV replacing Darna. From millions of hopefuls from different provinces all over the Philippines, only 14 will have the chance to survive. If in the first two seasons, StarStruck is shown only weekdays having Friday as Elimination Night, this season Mondays to Fridays will be tests and Sundays would be the elimination night. The show held its Final Judgment on March 12, 2006.

This time, from the two Ultimate Survivors, an Ultimate Sole Survivor will be picked who will win more than 10 million pesos worth of prizes, consisting of an exclusive GMA talent management contract, a new house and lot, a large cash prize and a livelihood showcase.

[edit] Hosts

The third season is hosted by returning hosts Dingdong Dantes and Jolina Magdangal with the addition of Raymond Gutierrez.

[edit] Council

The judges for this season were entertainment guru Joey de Leon, drama actress Lorna Tolentino, and director Louie Ignacio

[edit] Computer controversy

A controversial incident happened in the sixth week of Season 3.

StarStruck Council member director Louie Ignacio revealed that someone from the remaining survivors had opened a confidential file on the show's computer and had subsequently told the other finalists about the next challenges the show has in store for them.

Those implicated were Sara Larsson, Jackie Rice and Jana Roxas, with Sara eventually ousted as the sixth finalist to bid the contest goodbye.

But even with Sara eliminated, the issue did not die but grew into a big controversy with more shocking revelations and crying bouts. Jackie and Jana accused another survivor, Arci Muñoz, of lying. The show aired footage captured by surveillance cameras showing the girls taking turns at the StarStruck computer, but they all denied opening the confidential file in question.

On the seventh week fifth StarStruck Avenger Sara Larsson was given time to reveal her side of the story. On that same night, Arci Muñoz was eliminated.

[edit] Final Judgment

The Final Judgment for the third season was held on March 12, 2005 (Kapuso Holiday) at the Marikina Sports Park, the biggest venue in StarStruck history. Marky Cielo of Mountain Province became the First Ultimate Sole Survivor and the Ultimate Male Survivor while Jackie Rice of Olongapo City became the Ultimate Female Survivor.

Both of them won one million pesos each and exclusive GMA Network contracts worth two million pesos each. As Ultimate Sole Survivor, Marky received a house and lot prize worth 2.5 million pesos, an additional 300,000 pesos in cash, and a business package worth 1.5 million pesos. First runner-ups Gian Carlos and Iwa Moto received P250,000 cash each and exclusive GMA Network contracts. While the Final Judgment was in progress, the third batch of the Starstruck Avengers were also given exclusive GMA contracts.

For their first TV assignment, the Starstruck Final 4 of Marky, Jackie, Iwa and Gian headlined one of the episodes of Love to Love Season 10 entitled "Young at Hearts". They co-starred with veteran actors Leo Martinez and Luz Valdez and Starstruck Avengers Chuck Allie, Jana Roxas and Vaness del Moral.

[edit] Homecoming: A StarStruck Special

The Final 4 of StarStruck Batch 3 were given their own TV special entitled Homecoming: A StarStruck Special which was aired last April 23. In the special, Marky, Jackie, Gian and Iwa went back to their respective hometowns where they were treated accordingly as VIPs in their respective home provinces. Apart from that, there were several revelations from the Final 4 as far as their lives were concerned.

[edit] Fourth season (2006-07)

On September 3, 2006, GMA Network formally announced the return of their reality-based talent show now titled StarStruck: The Next Level (aka StarStruck 4), a new and improved edition of the popular show, and it was expecting to air on November 2006.

In the 4th year of the reality-talent search, the age bracket for star wannabes was adjusted from 15-18 in previous batches to 16-21, a milestone in Starstruck History.

Same as the previous batches applicants will be trimmed to 14 until two will be declared ultimate survivors (1 male, 1 female) and they would be officially paired as loveteam.

If last year, the twist was that from two Ultimate Survivors, one will emerge as Sole Survivor. This time, aside from the Ultimate Survivors, the network would also be looking for an Ultimate Hunk or a Matinee Idol and an Ultimate Sweetheart, who will be developed as individual talents and not as part of a love team.

GMA Network is conducting auditions nationwide for the next few months[1].
