St Mary's Hospital for Women and Children is a hospital in Manchester. It was founded in 1790. St Mary's provides a unique range of inter-related services specifically for women and children. Out-patient and in-patient facilities exist to provide mainstream and specially services in the areas of:
Obstetrics, Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Special Needs Paediatric ward, Neonatal medicine, Neonatal surgery, Genetics / Immunogenetics Laboratory, Department of Reproductive Medicine, and the multi-disciplinary approach adopted by clinicians aims to provide the highest standard of care for mother and child.
St Mary's Hospital is headed by a Clinical Director and a Directorate Manager. Clinical services are managed in clinical teams and represented at the Directorate Management Board, which meets regularly.
Approximately 800 staff, including doctors, nurses, midwives, clinical and non clinical support staff work in St Mary's Hospital.
A range of clinical and non clinical support services are based at the site to support the work undertaken, including well established departments of radiology and physiotherapy.
St Mary's Hospital is constantly striving not only to meet the ever increasing demands placed upon its service, but to anticipate the future needs of the population which it serves. The development of St Mary's as a regional specialist centre continues, with the transfer of maternity and neonatal services, following the closure of Withington, recently completed. Neonatal surgery and Neonatal medicine are shortly to expand, thereby allowing a greater number of poorly babies to be cared for. Paediatric medicine and surgery are growing in complexity and volume, and with some conditions becoming more prevalent amongst children - such as diabetes and asthma - St Mary's response has been to develop specialist clinics to cater for children with these symptoms.
In addition to the services already listed, the Sexual Assault Referral Centre, also based at St Mary's, represents a unique collaboration between Central Manchester Healthcare Trust and the Greater Manchester Police Authority. The Centre accepts emergency or self referrals from adults who have been raped or sexually assaulted.
As a teaching hospital, St Mary's has a significant commitment to the teaching of medical staff and has close links with the University of Manchester Medical School. There are three University Chairs in post in Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Child Health and Medical Genetics. And the University has extensive research facilities on the hospital site.
