[edit] Personal
Sridevi has been married to film producer Boney Kapoor since June 2, 1996 and has two daughters, Jhanvi and Khushi, both named after heroines in her husband's movies (Judaai and Hamara Dil Aapke Paas Hai). She lost her parents during the making of two films: her father, a lawyer, during the making of Lamhe and her mother during the making of Judaai. Though it is Hindu custom that the eldest son lights the funeral pyre, Sridevi did so for her mother's last rites. She has a sister, Srilata, with whom she was briefly estranged (her only sister disapproved of Sridevi's marriage to the then married Boney Kapoor!).
Her brothers-in-laws are actors Sanjay Kapoor, Anil Kapoor and Sandeep Marwah. Anil Kapoor has played opposite Sridevi in over a dozen movies. She also has a sister-in-law, Reena. Her father-in-law is film producer Surinder Kapoor.
[edit] Career
She started her career as a child artist in South Indian regional films and performed in over 200 movies. She also appeared as Julie's Even after establishing a presence in Bollywood, Sridevi continued to make Tamil & Telugu films. She was a star in her own right in Tollywood too. She had been paired to act across the leading actors of the industry: with Nagarjuna in "Aakhari Poratam","Govinda Govinda","Khuda Gawah"[1]) and with Chiranjeevi in "Jagadeka Veerudu Attilokasundari"[2], and Venkatesh in "Kshana Kshanam"[3]. In her earlier years, she had even acted with Telugu film stalwarts like Akkineni Nageshwara Rao & N T Rama Rao.
In 1983, she starred in her first Hindi film, Solva Saawan. This movie failed at the box office; however, her second Hindi movie, Himmatwala, was a super-success. She became a star overnight and was nicknamed Thunder Thighs by the media. Soon she became the Number One actress of Bollywood and ruled the industry for more than a decade like no other actress ever had. Throughout the 1980s, she starred in a number of very successful movies, among them Nagina, Mr. India, Chandni, and Chaalbaaz, which won her, her first Hindi Filmfare Award. The super success of these films made her the undisputed Queen Bee. She dominated the industry with her sheer screen power and versatility. Called the Electric Eyes of the 90s she was the most sought-after actress for all top directors like Shekhar Kapoor and Yash Chopra. She is perhaps the only actress for whom title roles were written keeping her in mind. Also a dancing sensation, she gave many memorable songs and dances. Sridevi also remains one of the highest paid actresses of all time in Indian Cinema.
Yash Chopra directed her in Lamhe (1992), which won her her second Filmfare Best Actress Award and the International Best Actress Award. She was also approached by none other than Steven Spielberg with a film offer at the peak of her career but rejected it, as she thought it would take too much time from her crowded Indian filming schedule.[citation needed] After the superhit Judaai (1997), she left the industry in order to raise her two daughters, Jhanvi and Khushi.
After a six-year hiatus, Sridevi returned to the small screen, briefly, in the Sahara sitcom Malini Iyer (2004-2005). She also appeared on Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai for Karisma Kapoor (2004) and as a judge in the TV show Kaboom (2005). She is also the brand ambassador for a number of products esp. jewellery.
She is a member of the Board of Directors at the Asian Academy of film and television. She was also a part of Mani Ratnam's stage show, Netru, Indru, Naalai. She is now slated to return with the sequel of her superhit film Mr India.
