SoltyRei (ソルティレイ?) is a Japanese anime series by GONZO and AIC combining attributes of drama and sci-fi, about the inhabitants of a city where an Aurora prevents aerial travel.

On 2006-04-02 FUNimation Entertainment confirmed at Anime Expo that it had the rights to distribute Solty Rei[1]. Prior to this a fansubbing group had reported receiving a cease and desist letter from FUNimation Entertainment with the English name of the anime given as Origin[2], although the name seems to have been confused with Origin: Spirits of the Past.

[edit] Characters

(in approximate order of appearance)
Solty (voiced by Momoko Saitō)
A gynoid with green hair. After indirectly saving the life of Roy, and then directly once again, she takes up residence with him and is later adoped by him giving her the surname Revant. Possessing a cheerful, helpful personality, she generally spends time cooking or performing housework for Roy and later Rose. Her construction allows for a number of superhuman abilities, including high resistance to injury and greatly enhanced strength and speed, and the ability to resonate her fists to disintegrate objects.
It is later revealed that her real name is Dike, the Greek goddess of human justice. In the final three episodes, she also gains the ability to levitate.
Roy Revant (Jōji Nakata)
A bounty hunter resembling a cross between Clint Eastwood and Bruce Willis. Although apparently gruff and standoffish, he gradually warms to Solty's presence. He lost his wife and daughter in the Blast Fall event, and has difficulty communicating with others. Made it his top priority to find his missing daughter who he believed was still alive.
while not realising that the girl named Rose, who made herself at home at his place to get the reluctant Solty to help her on her little thefts, was his daughter until he found out that Solty learned a song from her that his daughter loved as a little child which came from an old record of his that was very rare.
Miranda Maverick (Sayaka Ōhara)
Roy's sister-in-law, she runs an independent bounty hunting organization. Normally kind and laid-back.
Kasha Maverick (Natsuko Kuwatani)
Miranda's daughter, she's pragmatic and slightly distrustful of others.
Yuto K. Steel
A Resemble specialist in the city hospital, it is through his analysis that Solty's gynoid nature is revealed. After being fired due to an accident during the diagnosis, he moves in with Roy and Solty. A stereotypical geek, his fascination with Solty annoys Roy and Kasha to no end.
Rose Anderson (Masumi Asano)
A vain, attention-seeking thief, calling herself 'the Blue Comet'. Although her brothers and her donate their spoils to the unregistered citizens clustered on the city underground and outskirts, they often cause large amounts of public damage in the process. She is armed with a laser-based hand pistol, and a large motorcycle with three spherical wheels in front, and the driving wheels behind, with a cannon hidden in the frame.
It is later revealed she is actually Roy's daughter Rita, her hair and eye color changed due to exposure from the Blast Fall, and having been adopted by Larry and Andy's father with no memory of who she was, she initially resist the idea of their connection until later. She later works directly for Ashley Links to follow his dream while being brainwashed which was slowly wearing off.
Larry Anderson
The older of two brothers, he has noticeably pink hair.
Andy Anderson
The younger, hot-tempered brother, with spiky brown hair.
Ashley Links
A white haired, high-ranking member of RUC. His left eye, arm, and possibly more of his body are Resemble. Although apparently charming, he has ulterior motives for those who work for him. He ultimately has little regard for his subordinates. His original name is Locke.
Axela Warrick (Mamiko Noto)
A redheaded, shy, information specialist. She takes care of Solty temporarily after Roy insults her, her Proceed suit only appears in the last 4 episodes; it is white, and allows her greater computer network access.
Celica Yayoi (Yukari Tamura)
A tanned, carefree sniper. She often teases Axela. Her Proceed suit is orange, and contains multiple laser ports on the shoulders and arms. She does her job well as long as she gets paid.
Later in the series, she rebels over the RUC but is killed by Rose.
Integra Martel (Ryō Hirohashi)
The dark-haired leader of Proceed, she's responsible and level-headed. Her Proceed suit is pink, and increases her speed, though it taxes her to do this more than three times successively.
Sylvia Ban (Shizuka Itō)
A hot-tempered blonde who seems to have romantic feelings for Ashley, she challenges Rose to a duel in their armor the latter is inducted. Her Proceed suit is blue and increases her strength.
Later in the story, she confronts Ashley after she hears that Axela is no longer needed in the division since Rose takes over as their leader. She eventually dies due to Ashley's resemble arm thrusting into her.
Josef
A former senior member of RUC who knows Solty's workings well. He had a dispute with Ashley Links in the past.

[edit] Glossary

Aurora Shell
A protective barrier that holds the atmosphere of the planet in place. Any object that comes into contact with it is affected much the same as being struck by lightning. In addition to the Aurora-like waves of color produced at night, it also hinders air travel and EM wave detection.
It is revealed near the end of the series that it contains a large number of nanomachines; after the Blast Fall, children that were exposed to the falling nanomachine snow had their DNA altered, including Rose, Axela, Integra, Sylvia, and Celica.
Blast Fall
A disaster that occurred approximately 12 years ago, when an overly large building was struck by the Aurora Shell, causing widespread death and destruction from the falling debris.
Proceed
A quartet of specialist operatives commanded by Ashley Links. Each has had indirect genetic alteration, and has access to body armor that provides specific abilities. These bear a striking resemblance to the Knight Saber suits from Bubblegum Crisis, as the concept designer for both that series and this is Kenichi Sonoda. The four members are all named after models of car.
Resemble
A broad term for prostheses used to replace human body parts, became more widespread after the Blast Fall due to the sheer number of injuries sustained during the event. It also links the users to Eunomia, the central computer of the RUC.
RUC
A general company/government that manages daily activities in the city, much like the Paradigm Group in The Big O. In addition to a private security force, they also have large four-wheeled mechs resembling construction cranes. They were created by the colony supervisor computer Eunomia as a means of regulating the city.
