The Society of Light expands its influence over the globe

The Society of Light expands its influence over the globe

The Society of Light is led by a mysterious duelist by the name of Sartorius (Takuma Saiou). On the surface, the goal of Sartorius and his organization appears to be world domination starting with Duel Academy (Duel Academia) by expanding their syndicate, but Sartorius evidently wishes to put his stalled fate back into motion through the powers of Jaden Yuki (Judai Yuki) and Aster Phoenix (Ed Phoenix). His ultimate goal is to put an end to the "age of darkness" by destroying the planet to restore balance to its imperfect state, and create the world (or on a greater scale, the universe) anew. Members are brainwashed into the Society's fold by losing to Sartorius or one of his representatives in a duel, using Sartorius' own mystical powers of fate-prediction and his talent for pushing an opponent's buttons to make them lose faith in their own lives and convince them that joining the Society is a much preferable alternative.

Duelists reined into the Society in this manner are usually very devoted to its goals, and have a deep obsession with the color white. Essentially, the truth of their obedience is clouded behind the Society, Sartorius, and the lies they are told. Only those with incredibly strong wills or those under the influence of outside forces can escape the Society's hold, and at its basic level, Sartorius' mind control is not necessarily absolute; with some duelists, aspects of their old personalities can shine through on occasion, though this can be rectified should Sartorius exercise more strength in using his powers. The signature card used by the highest ranking members is White Veil, which represents their belief in "light of truth."

Shortly after the second year begins, Chazz Princeton (Jun Manjoume) is defeated by Sartorius and coerced into joining the organization. From then on, he serves as means of converting the remaining top Obelisk Blue students, and by episode 70, most of them are defeated and have "seen the light." In protest, Alexis Rhodes (Asuka Tenjouin) duels with Chazz, only to become a member herself upon her loss.

During the field trip to Domino City, Sartorius confronts Seto Kaiba and requests the use of KaibaLand. Once his request is granted, Jaden and Aster are lured into the virtual world by his sister, Sarina (Mizuchi Saiou). Upon learning of their victory, Sartorius suddenly becomes more interested in leading them towards their respective dooms. As his sister alludes (states explicitly in the Japanese version), the universe's threat lies in the Wheel of Fate (Wheel of Fortune), a metaphor for both Sartorius' destiny and the weapon of mass destruction he would later obtain.

In episode 82, Chazz begins recruiting top students of Ra Yellow for the Society of Light, which leads Bastion Misawa (Daichi Misawa) to challenge Sartorius to a duel. Sartorius sends Chazz in place of himself, and Bastion allows himself to be defeated in order to become a member of the organization. Two episodes later, under Sartorius' request, Sheppard (Samejima) invites Prince Orgene of the kingdom Misralz to participate in the Genex tournament. Sartorius thus acquires the control switch for the most destructive laser satellite known to the world, Sora (ソーラ Sōra), along with the two keys for its activation, by defeating him in a duel. To prevent his evil side from instigating world destruction, Sartorius eventually approaches Jaden and Aster, giving them the keys. In response, his evil personality assigns more dueling assassins to win the keys back, but is unsuccessful.

In episode 97, Maximillion Pegasus (Pegasus J. Crawford) reveals the origins of the Society of Light. In the dark recesses of space, several hundreds of millions of years ago, a white hole released the dark matter of a black hole, as well as a great energy known as the Surge of Light (光の波動 Hikari no Hadō), which bombarded the Earth throughout the course of history, propogating wars, disasters, crimes, and dictatorships. The "Ultimate D-Card" created by Aster's father was corrupted by such energy, and caused both Sartorius and Pro League king, DD, to develop split personalities. Because of its infectious properties that rival the powers of the Egyptian God Cards and Sacred Beast Cards (Three Phantom Demons), as well as his concern that Aster will be harmed should it ever arrive in his hands, Pegasus wishes to seal the card away before it brings an end to the world.

In episode 100, Aster breaks into Obelisk Blue looking for Sartorius, and finds him waiting in the Society of Light's private duel field, the Great White Temple (ホワイト大神殿 Howaito Dai Shinden). Intending to keep his promise of saving Sartorius from his destiny of becoming a destroyer, Aster considers relinquishing his key to Sora, but is persuaded by Jaden to do otherwise. Recognizing the present Sartorius as an imposter posing as his dearest friend, he wagers the key in a duel, but is quickly overwhelmed by the persona calling itself the "Light of Ruin" (破滅の光 Hametsu no Hikari).

Following Aster's defeat, Jaden takes his place to determine the fate of the world by dueling Sartorius. While the battle is taking place, Chazz successfully reverts most of the Society of Light's members back to their former selves with the assistance of a group of Obelisk Blue students, thereby releasing Duel Academy from the Society's grip. Having obtained both keys due to a blunder on Jaden's part, Sartorius takes complete control of Orgene and orders him to the fire the laser satellite. Although it does cause some damage to the planet's surface, Sarina hacks into Sora's programming to disable it, allowing both Elemental Hero Neos and Tyranno Hassleberry (Tyranno Kenzan) to destroy the satellite. Shortly afterwards, Jaden defeats Sartorius, and the Light of Ruin is sealed away.

  • Jun Manjoume (万丈目準 Manjōme Jun) / Chazz Princeton - The first witness to Sartorius' mighty Tarot deck. Chazz is given the opportunity to change his destiny by entering the Society of Light. During his duel with Jaden in the Genex tournament, Chazz regains his senses and leaves the Society of Light.
  • Asuka Tenjouin (天上院明日香 Tenjōin Asuka) / Alexis Rhodes - Motivated by pride as an Obelisk Blue duelist, Alexis vows to halt Chazz's conversion of her fellow students. However, she loses in a duel against Chazz, and she too comes to share his fate. She returns to her old self and leaves the Society of Light after losing in a duel against Jaden.

[edit] Former Ra Yellow students

  • Daichi Misawa (三沢大地 Misawa Daichi) / Bastion Misawa - Feeling that he has been left out by the Society of Light, Bastion challenges Sartorius to a duel, but Chazz wants to show off, and duels with Bastion instead. Bastion intentionally loses to join the organization. After weeks of being overlooked by Sartorius and his colleagues, as well as a discussion with Albert Zweinstein, Bastion becomes "enlightened," and leaves the Society on his own.

[edit] Lorenzo

Lorenzo (Ryusei Gin)
Lorenzo (Ryusei Gin)

Ryusei Gin (銀流星 Gin Ryūsei) / Lorenzo - The champion of the Shooting Game, who is employed by Alexis and Chazz to duel Jaden. Although he is defeated by Jaden, he comes to understand his opponent's definition of a fun duel. Sartorius punishes Lorenzo for his failure, taking complete control of him and his future and leaving Lorenzo's hair stark white. His name in the original version means "silver meteor" when translated in Japanese order. In the English version, he speaks with the accent of a New York mafia member.

[edit] Card list

Lorenzo plays a B.E.S. (Giant Battleship; 巨大戦艦 Kyodaisenkan) deck. With the effect of Boss Rush, Lorenzo is able to continuously summon B.E.S. monsters as they are destroyed, causing extra damage with Cyber Summon Blaster. The flaw of this strategy, however, is that he is no longer able to summon in any other manner as long as Boss Rush remains in play. The concept of Lorenzo's cards is derived from the Konami video game series, Gradius.

  • Monster cards
    • Big Core
    • B.E.S. Crystal Core

Princess Rose (プリンセス・ローズ Purinsesu Rōzu) - A representative selected by Sartorius to duel Jaden in his place. She claims to have the ability to see Duel Monster spirits, but others do not believe her. Jaden, however, notices the spirit of a frog prince watching over her following their duel.

[edit] Card list

Rose plays a Frog deck. Through the effects of her trump card Des Frog, as well as T.A.D.P.O.L.E., Rose is able to summon three copies of the former relatively quickly. With her assault team in play, she is able to neutralize all threats and constantly strengthen her monsters with various other cards.

  • Monster cards
    • T.A.D.P.O.L.E. (Tadpole)

[edit] Trivia
  • The original name of Treeborn Frog, Yomigaeru, is a pun on the Japanese phrase "yomigaeru" (甦る), meaning "revive."
  • When left untranslated, the proper original name of Amphibian Angel, Mi Gaeru, has two interpretations. The "Mi" portion is derived from "mitsu" (三つ) a Japanese word meaning "three" - three sacrifices are needed to activate the card's abilities. The name in its entirety is derived from the name of the archangel, Michael.
  • When left untranslated, the original name of Frog Resurrection, Ikikaeru, is a pun on the Japanese phrase "ikikaeru" (生き返る), meaning "restore to life."

[edit] Bob Banter

Tsugio Kanda (神田次男 Kanda Tsugio) / Bob "Game Show" Banter - The Quiz King who has feelings for Alexis, and is saddened by the fact that she considers him uninteresting (in the Japanese version, she instead never remembers his name). He duels Jaden in hopes of impressing her. His name in the English version is a pun on the name of Bob Barker.

[edit] Card list

Bob plays a Game Show (Quiz) deck, which sets up the duel as a game show, with Bob as the host. The majority of his monsters possess abilities that activate when they are flipped face-up, causing damage to opponent if he is unable to answer a posed question correctly, or inflicting damage to himself if he does answer correctly. Once his Quiz Panels are depleated, the summoning of Quizzer Panel 9 allows Bob to return all of them to his deck for another round.

[edit] Aster Phoenix

  • Ed Phoenix (エド・フェニックス Edo Fenikkusu) / Aster Phoenix - Though not a member of the Society of Light, Aster is a professional duelist under Sartorius' management. After he is defeated by Jaden, he begins to think about whether or not he is in fact being used as a tool by Sartorius when his manager does not tell him about the plans of the Society of Light.

[edit] X

Howard X Miller (or "X")

Howard X Miller (or "X")

X (エックス Ekkusu) / Howard X Miller - Sartorius' lawyer, who dreamed of becoming a pastry chef when he was a child. In the Japanese version, he is instead a Pro League duelist associated with the Society of Light whose ranking is greater than Aster's. He successfully reduced the cards in Jaden's deck to zero, but lost when his own deck was exhausted. His name is meant to be a pun in English, as "mill" (a term borrowed from Magic: The Gathering) denotes a direct disruption of a player's deck.

[edit] Card list

X plays a Deck Destruction deck. His strategy relies primarily on Monster Register, a card that, under normal circumstances would effectively demolish the decks of both players. X, however, cleverly protects himself with the ability of Trap Sluzer, while rendering himself almost untouchable with a wide array of Spells and Traps.

  • Monster cards
    • Trap Sluzer (Trap Sleuther)

[edit] Prince Orgene I

Prince Orgene

Prince Orgene

Prince Orgene (オージーン王子 Ōjīn Ōji) - A professional duelist and celebrity from Misralz who dueled against Sartorius in the Genex tournament. He gloated that he would defeat Sartorius with one attack, but was himself defeated before Sartorius' first turn even came. Upon his defeat, he fell under Sartorius' influence and provided him with the control switch for his laser satellite, Sora. He returns later in the tournament to retrieve one of the switch's keys given to Jaden by Sartorius' good personality, but fails despite aid from the Surge of Light. While Jaden and Sartorius face one another in their final duel, Orgene falls under Sartorius' control once again, and is successful in arming Sora.

[edit] Card list

Orgene plays a Satellite deck. His strategic preference involves devoting all his resources to performing a "One Turn Kill" with Satellite Cannon.

Dr. Albert Zweinstein (アルバート・ツバインスタイン博士 Arubāto Tsubainshutain Hakase) - A nine-time Nobeli award-winning German medical doctor with an IQ of 173 specializing in duel physics who arrives at Duel Academy under Prince Orgene's request. He is sent by Sartorius to eliminate Jaden and retrieve his key to Sora, but underestimates the young duelist's tactics and fails. Bastion idolizes him for his unified theory of the world constituting a "beautiful space," calling him a "god." His name is a pun on the name of Albert Einstein.

[edit] Card list

Zweinstein plays a Relativity deck. Being a duel physicist, Zweinstein has researched extensively the interactions between Monster, Spell, and Trap cards, coming to the conclusion that science overtakes any sort of "miracle." As such, his deck exploits statistics and probability, yet in doing so, ignores alternative methods of achieving identical results, as with Jaden's use of Contact Fusion.

[edit] Trivia

[edit] Sarina and the Light Brigade

During the Duel Academy field trip to Domino City, Sartorius enlisted the help of his sister and her Light Brigade (Four Emperor; 四帝 Yon Tei) duelists to lure Jaden and Aster to KaibaLand. He was concerned with changing the progression of his fate, and wanted Sarina to determine which of the two duelists would be better suited to putting his Wheel of Fate into motion.

[edit] Sarina

Sarina (Mizuchi Saiou)
Sarina (Mizuchi Saiou)

Mizuchi Saiou (斎王美寿知 Saiō Mizuchi) / Sarina - Sartorius' younger sister, who is a miko. She granted her assassins special abilities with her own powers, and erected a barrier around Domino City that prevented Duel Monster spirits from leaving the boundary while Frost and Thunder dueled Tyranno and Syrus (Sho Marufuji). After disposing of her subordinates, she challenged Aster and Jaden to a tag duel in KaibaLand's virtual system, but was ultimately defeated. Sarina then revealed that she wished to save her brother from the influence of an evil aura housed in a Hero card that was shown to him when they were younger. In a final act of gratitude, she helped those trapped within the virtual world to escape, but was left behind in the collapsing program, digitizing herself to act as her brother's "guardian." While no mention of it is made in the English adaptation, the Japanese version further includes a promise by Sugoroku Mutou (Solomon Muto in the English anime) to speak with Seto Kaiba in hopes of restoring her consciousness. Sarina returns near the end of the second year, contributing to Sora's end. She is flown in to Duel Academy via helicopter by Kaiba's associates, and reunited with her brother.

[edit] Card list

Sarina plays a Mirror deck. Each of her Silver Spirit (Shikigami; 式神) monsters, based off spirits called shikigami, is paired with another, and she uses their abilities to constantly revive them from the graveyard to either activate Mirror Bind, or to use as fodder for Full Moon Mirror. Once a collection of ten counters has collected on the latter, she is able to play Infinite Fiend Mirror to summon nine copies of her powerful Dark Creator to the field. The concept of Sarina's cards is derived from onmyōdō, and she herself takes on the role of an onmyōji during episodes in which she makes appearances.

  • Monster cards
    • Silver Spirit - Ukyo
    • Silver Spirit - Sakyo
    • Magic Mirror Spirit - Nayuta
    • Magic Mirror Spirit - Asogi

    • Return Talisman (Shikigami Return)

[edit] Trivia

  • With the exception of Silver Spirit Redirection, when left untranslated, the "Silver" portion of the original names of Sarina's cards, "Shirogane" (銀), alludes specifically to the silver light cast in the reflection of a mirror.
  • The "Uky(i)" and "Sa" portions of the names of Silver Spirit - Ukyo and Silver Spirit - Sakyo mean "left" and "right," respectively.
  • The design of Dark Creator is based off an illustration by Toshiki Nakayama (中山俊希 Nakayama Toshiki) submitted for a card illustration contest held earlier during the series.

[edit] Thunder

Thunder (Ikazuchimaru)

Thunder (Ikazuchimaru)

Ikazuchimaru (雷丸) / Thunder - Frost's tag duel partner against Syrus and Tyranno. He was sealed in a mirror by Sarina when she no longer had any use for him, but was freed alongside the other Light Brigade duelists after Jaden and Aster defeated her. The "Ikazuchi" portion of his name in the Japanese version is derived from the word "ikazuchi" (雷), meaning "lightning."

[edit] Card list

Thunder plays a Thunder deck, supported by tag duel-exclusive cards. His tactics are more upfront than his partner's in that he utilizes cards such as Rampage Condenser and Lightning Talisman to inflict damage directly, rather than through battle.

  • Monster cards
    • Thunder Knight
    • Reflector Bit
    • Zaborg the Thunder Monarch (Thunder Emperor Zaborg)

[edit] Frost

Frost (Kourimaru)
Frost (Kourimaru)

Kourimaru (氷丸 Kōrimaru) / Frost - Thunder's tag duel partner against Syrus and Tyranno. Unlike Thunder, he valued victory above all else, and was not above eliminating his partner from the duel. He was sealed in a mirror by Sarina when she no longer had any use for him, but was freed alongside the other Light Brigade duelists after Jaden and Aster defeated her. The "Kouri" portion of his name in the Japanese version is derived from the word "kōri" (氷), meaning "ice." In the English version, he has a Hispanic accent.

[edit] Card list

Frost plays an Ice deck, supported by tag duel-exclusive cards. His tactics are less upfront than his partner's in that he utilizes cards such as Mobius Castle and Mobius Glacier to weaken his opponents' monsters, then destroy them through the attacks of Mobius the Frost Monarch.

  • Monster cards
    • Ice Knight
    • Mobius the Frost Monarch (Ice Emperor Mobius)

Blaze (Honoumaru)

Honoumaru (火丸 Honōmaru) / Blaze - An assassin who escaped Sarina's lair with T-Bone. He revealed to Jaden that he and T-Bone had themselves once enrolled at Duel Academy, but left after failing an exam. Eventually caught and sealed in a mirror by Sarina, he was freed alongside the other Light Brigade duelists after Jaden and Aster defeated her. The "Honou" portion of his name in the Japanese version is derived from the word "honō" (火), meaning "fire."

[edit] Trivia

  • In the Japanese version, Honoumaru is voiced by Masaki Ishikawa.

[edit] T-Bone

T-Bone (Iwamaru)
T-Bone (Iwamaru)

Iwamaru (岩丸) / T-Bone - An assassin who escaped Sarina's lair with Blaze. Although he befriended Jaden, his master tracked him down and coerced him into dueling the boy. Following his defeat, he was sealed in a mirror by Sarina, but was freed alongside the other Light Brigade duelists after Jaden and Aster defeated her. In the English version, he is a rapper wannabe. The "Iwa" portion of his name in the Japanese version is derived from the word "iwa" (岩), meaning "rock."

[edit] Card list

T-Bone plays a Rock deck, but the signature cards of his fellow Light Brigade duelists were forcefully placed in his deck by Sarina for his duel with Jaden. His main strategy consists of the repetitive summoning of copies of his Rock-type monsters through Guidance of Ore. The Monarchs themselves fuel the summoning of T-Bone's greatest monster, Demiurge Ema, which has the ability to draw strength from Spells and Traps that have become Homunculus Tokens.
