Society for News Design
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Society for News Design (SND) is an international organization for professionals working in the news sector of the media industry, specifically those involved with graphic design, illustration, web design and infographics. Founded in 1979, it is a United States-registered non-profit organization with around 2600 members worldwide. Among other activities, it runs an annual Best of Newspaper Design™ competition open to newspapers from around the world at Syracuse University every February, and a yearly conference (rotating through various cities) that brings in visual journalists from all over the world. The 2006 conference was held in Orlando from August 31-Sept. 2, and the 2007 conference will head to Boston.
The current president of SND is Christine McNeal, the Deputy Managing Editor of Presentation and Weekends at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
SND also has a number of offshoot organizations, including student chapters (the largest including those at Michigan State University, the University of Missouri–Columbia and Syracuse University) and international chapters.

[edit] SND Orlando 2006 "The Intern" competition
SND Orlando 2006 hosted the inaugural "The Intern" competition. Ten student designers were chosen from a pool of applicants to compete for internships at The San Jose Mercury News, The Orlando Sentinel, and The Arizona Republic. The interns competed for a whole week and attended the SND conference. Their design challenges included group designing a newspaper front page in an hour, an early-morning redesign of the page, an unexpected photo scavenger hunt in Disney World, and designing a photo essay based on their roommate's shots.
Over the summer, competitors were asked to create a one-minute film and design a campaign poster. After all challenges in Orlando were completed, five students were cut. During the SND Orlando conference's luncheon that weekend, a short reality television-style film explained the challenges to attendees. Based on the video, the student films and their posters, attendees voted to determine the top three winners. The three, announced at the conference's final banquet dinner, competed for the internships in a design quiz bowl hosted by newspaper design consultant and author Tim Harrower. The St. Petersburg Times awarded an internship to the fourth-place winner and the Indianapolis Star the fifth. All students who attended the student session were given the opportunity to compete for a Poynter fellowship.
