A snapalope (plural snapalope) is a marketing campaign for Slim Jim brand beef jerky. Snapalope are fictional creatures patterned after antelope. Commercials for Slim Jims revolve around "Snapalope hunting" and record the "hunts" for snapalope conducted in convenience stores. The Snapalope website is run by the fictional SHAA (Snapalope Hunting Association of America).

[edit] Appearance

Snapalope are (according to the official website) thirty-one inches tall and are made entirely out of Slim Jims. They have a horizontal Slim Jim for a body and four Slim Jims for legs. They have a neck made out of a Slim Jim bent at two-thirds from the body to create a head, and two "antlers". On the SHAA website, it says that snapalope have no natural predators aside from man, who hunt them for their "delicious spicy meat and exquisite yellow and red hide" (an obvious reference to the Slim Jim and its yellow-and-red wrapper). The website also says that the legs are used to jump on shelving and the antlers are used to knock down soda cans. Also, the website states that the Snapalope's hide allows it to camouflage itself. Also, snapalope are said to have a "keen sense of balance" and a "distinctive crinkle sound" when they walk (again a reference to the wrapper).

[edit] Habitat

Snapalope reside in convenience stores, feeding on hot dog crumbs and soda. According to the SHAA, snapalope tend to "dwell in small herds and tend to stay in the one store their entire lives". The website also says that their numbers "continue to rise".

[edit] Behaviour

According to the SHAA website, snapalope are not noted for their intelligence and rely heavily on their speed and sensitivity to movement in order to stay alive. Snapalope are also very skittish and prone to run away if disturbed. This makes snapalope hunting a difficult activity.

"Snapalope hunting" is a major part of snapalope lore. The SHAA site contains a complete "guide" to this activity, divided into several sub-sections.

[edit] Hunting fees [2]

There are no fees for snapalope hunting.

[edit] Decoy hunting [3]

The site contains instructions for making a snapalope decoy.

[edit] Snapalope calls [4]

"Snapalope calls" are made by rubbing together two Slim Jim wrappers. The site humorously states that the call needs to be practiced and perfected.

[edit] Snapalope traps [5]

"Snapalope traps" are made by setting a shopping basket against a spatula, which has a string tied around its handle (which is held by the hunter). The instructions say to put a soda can under the basket to lure the snapalope and when the snapalope takes the bait, to pull the string. The snapalope is then trapped under the basket, although it can still move around.

[edit] Hiding [6]

Another method of hunting snapalope is to hide from them as not to be seen. One method given is the "star", where the hunter puts their arms and legs out to the side and props themself against an aisle. They then fall down upon an unsuspecting snapalope. The other technique for hiding is called the "chiller", which involves hiding inside an ice cooler to ambush a snapalope.

[edit] Camouflage [7]

One way of hunting snapalope is for the hunter to camouflage themselves. There are two ways to do this; one is to wear a specially printed body suit, and the other is to stick products from the aisles onto the clothes with duct tape.

[edit] Grabbing the snapalope [8]

When grabbing the snapalope, the SHAA recommends grabbing it by the antlers, citing the diminished likeliness of the snapalope using its antlers in self defense, and also allowing a clean pickup.

[edit] Hand signals [9]

There are many hand signals diagrammed in the hunters' guide, which are intended to be used as nonverbal communication between two collaborating snapalope hunters.

[edit] Lookout perch [10]

SHAA advises that a snapalope hunter perches on top of shelving, giving an all-around view of the store.
