Slagelse municipality
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Slagelse municipality is a municipality (Danish, kommune) in West Zealand County on the west coast of the island of Zealand (Sjælland) in Denmark. The municipality covers an area of 192 km², and has a total population of 36.933 (2005). Its mayor is Lis Tribler, a member of the Social Democrats (Socialdemokraterne) political party.
The main city and the site of its municipal council is the city of Slagelse.
Neighboring municipalities are Sorø and Stenlille to the east, Dianalund, Høng and Gørlev to the north, and Korsør and Hashøj to the south. To the west is Musholm Bay (Musholm Bugt) and the Great Belt (Storebælt), the strait that separates Zealand and the island of Funen peninsula. The municipality of Kerteminde on the island of Funen is thus Slagelse's municipal neighbor to the west, albeit separated by the waters of the Great Belt.
By January 1, 2007 Slagelse municipality will cease to exist as the result of Kommunalreformen ("The Municipal Reform" of 2007). It will be merged with existing Hashøj, Korsør, and Skælskør municipalities to form the new Slagelse municipality. This will create a municipality with an area of 571 km² and a total population of 76,519 (2006). The new municipality will belong to the new Region Sjælland ("Zealand Region").
