Shahrastani

Shahrastani (ch.c. Nijinsky II- Shademah (Thatch)) was a thoroughbred race horse foaled in 1983. He won the English Derby at Epsom in 1986. Owned by HH Aga Khan IV and trained at Newmarket by Michael Stoute, he was ridden by Walter Swinburn, who had previously been successful in the race on Shergar, for the same owner and trainer, in 1981. Shahrastani was considered a lucky winner of the Epsom Derby because the runner-up and favourite Dancing Brave, who proved superior to Shahrastani in both the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes at Ascot and the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp later in the season, was given an injudicious ride by his jockey Greville Starkey at Epsom. Shahrastani won once more after his Epsom success, taking the Irish Derby by eight lengths and was retired to stud at Three Chimneys Farm in Kentucky at the end of his three year old career.
