Saltsjöbanan
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Saltsjöbanan is a suburban rail system between Stockholm and Saltsjöbaden in Nacka, Sweden. The rail system is 18.5 kilometres in length and contains eighteen stations in use.
Saltsjöbanan was inaugurated on 1 July 1893 and was operated with steam locomotives until 1910 after which the lines were gradually electrified. Initially the rail was operated by Järnvägs AB Stockholm-Saltsjön, and there was a lot of freight traffic present that made it profitable. The freight traffic diminished with time, and by 1960s it didn't make ends meet anymore and the Stockholm County Council took it over in 1969. Today it is owned by Storstockholms Lokaltrafik, SL.
Future plans for Saltsjöbanan include a conversion of it to a light rail system and linking it together with the Tvärbanan light rail and using the same type of cars as it uses. This has been a continuous topic in the local politics of Stockholm County, and proposed changes are supported by Nacka politicians from both political blocs, however the plans do not attract very much support outside of Nacka municipality itself, due to the heavy costs and logistical problems involved.
