Please explain what your up to, and why. ¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸ 29 June 2005 17:13 (UTC)

"Elaeocarpus" is a large genus with hundreds of species and a wide distribution across Asia and the Pacific. It is not synonymous with Rudraksha, which is a single species of Elaeocarpus. Other species, like the Blue Quandong of Australia, are not native to India, are not known by the name Rudraksha. Tom Radulovich 29 June 2005 17:15 (UTC)

Ah, ok, I didn't understand that. Shouldn't this be merged and redirected to Elaeocarpus then? ¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸ 29 June 2005 17:19 (UTC)

Not really. Elaeocarpus is a genus, the larger category that contains the species Elaeocarpus ganitrus, the Rudraksha Tree. The Rudraksha Tree probably warrants its own article; the taxobox I added can refer people to the larger categories (genus, family, etc.) that it belongs to. Tom Radulovich 29 June 2005 17:23 (UTC)

I've just come to explain here (after explaining at Elaeocarpus) why I'd moved the article back and made this a redirect. As the two were identical in content, apart from a list of external links, and as the article referred only to the seeds as being called "Rudrashka", there didn't seem to be much point keeping an article here. Could the relevant material be moved from the main article to this one? Is there enough to be said about the species to warrant an additional article? Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 29 June 2005 17:27 (UTC)

Apparently. Rudraksha are quite a signifigant item, and would likely end up doiminating an article on the larger genus. I think we should go w Tom's advice. Why were you deleting the external link, btw? ¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸ 29 June 2005 17:31 (UTC)
One was an obvious advert, the others were largely duplicating the same material. Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 29 June 2005 17:50 (UTC)

Restored this as a separate article; hopefully Sam Spade can fill in more useful details, and Sam Spade and Mel Etitis can figure out which of the external links to keep. To format articles on plants, check out Wikipedia:WikiProject Tree of Life. Tom Radulovich 29 June 2005 18:54 (UTC)

[edit] Information on Rudraksha

Rudraraka are the material from which sacred beads (108 in number) are formed from and are very important in Hindu custom. It is these sacred beads that one sees worn on Hindu monks. They are common in Shaivism and Ayya Vazhi. Here are some very good sites on shaivism:

Satguru Sivaya Subramuniyaswami defines rudrarakha from his book, Dancing with siva, rudraksha: (Sanskrit) ""Eye of Rudra;" or "red-eyed." From rud, "to cry," and aksha, meaning "eye." Marble-sized, multi-faced, reddish-brown seeds from the Eleocarpus ganitrus, or blue marble tree, which are sacred to Siva and a symbol of His compassion for humanity. Garlands, rudraksha mala, of larger seeds are worn around the neck by monks; and nonmonastics, both men and women, often wear a single bead on a cord at the throat. Smaller beads (usually numbering 108) are strung together for japa (recitation). Indian legend records that God shed a tear when looking down upon the sorrowful plight of humanity. That tear fell to Earth and from it grew the first rudraksha tree. Thus its seeds are worn by Hindus as a symbol of Siva's love and compassion.
