Rudy is a 1993 film directed by David Anspaugh. It is an account of the life of Daniel "Rudy" Ruettiger who harbored dreams of playing football at the University of Notre Dame despite significant obstacles. In 2005 "Rudy" was named one of the best 25 sports movies of the previous 25 years in two polls by ESPN (#24 by a panel of sports experts, and #4 by espn.com users) [1]

Daniel "Rudy" Ruettiger grew up dreaming of playing football at the University of Notre Dame. While achieving some success with his local high school football team, Ruettiger lacked the grades and money to attend Notre Dame, and talent and physical size (Ruettiger was only 5'6" and 165 pounds) to play football for the Fighting Irish. Instead, he takes a job at the local steel mill where his father works and prepares to settle down. When his best friend Pete is killed in an explosion at the mill, Rudy decides to follow his dream of attending Notre Dame and playing college football for the Fighting Irish, and leaves for Notre Dame, against his father's warning that "Ruettigers don't belong at Notre Dame." Ruettiger fails to get admitted to Notre Dame, and instead goes to a small junior college, Holy Cross, hoping to qualify for a transfer to the university. During his final semester of eligibility transfer, he is granted admission to Notre Dame. After walking onto football practice tryouts, Ruettiger convinces coach Ara Parseghian to give him a spot on the football practice team, where Rudy exhibits more drive and desire than some of his big-name varsity teammates. Upon Dan Devine's installation as head coach, Ruettiger fears he will lose the chance to dress for a home game, an arrangement he had with Parseghian. Late in the season of 1975, his teammates rise to his defense, demanding to Devine that Rudy be allowed to suit up for the final game of the season. In the penultimate play of that game, Coach Devine is persuaded to insert Rudy (after all the players and later the fans chanted "Rudy... Rudy... Rudy...,") who sacks the opposing quarterback to end the game on the subsequent play. Rudy is carried off the field by his teammates, the only Notre Dame player to have such a distinction.

- The real-life Rudy actually slept in the basketball arena, not the football stadium.[2]
- The real-life Rudy also has a cameo appearance as a fan in the final game. He is seated behind the character's father in the stands.
- Only two players, Pat Sarb and Ivan Brown, were really influential in giving up their jerseys and persuading Coach Devine to let Rudy play, not the whole team [3]
- Following the release of the film, ESPN reported that the real Dan Devine was not pleased about his negative portrayal in the film.[4]
- Pat Sarb's son, Matt Sarb, later attended Notre Dame and played on the football team wearing the same number as Rudy, #45. Like Rudy, Matt Sarb was a walk-on and his first major play was also on a coverage unit. He also had to deal with friends who thought he couldn't make it on the team as Rudy did. [5]
- The final scene with Rudy being carried off the field was re-created during a break in a real college football game, where Notre Dame faced Penn State in the 1992 Snow Bowl.
- The Warsaw High School Marching Band from Warsaw, Indiana performed their season show (Circus show) from 1992 as entertainment for the extras in the stadium during the filming. Unfortunately, the show started being performed right after the director asked the crowd to get up out of their seats and move over to the other about 100 feet to get another shot from a different angle. So there was not much focus on the performance. Nothing from this performance or their appearance showed up in the movie, although one of the band members won a car from a raffle that the producers had to promote the event.
- In the first bar scene, if you listen carfully you can hear the song "Ring of Fire" playing on the jukebox.

We have ninety-five players here, so accomplished as athletes in high school, we gave 'em full scholarships to the best football program in the country. NCAA regulations allow us to dress just sixty for home games; which means at least thirty-five scholarship players are gonna be watching the games from the stands. So if any of you dreamers has any fantasies about running out of that stadium tunnel with your gold helmet shining in the sun, you best leave them right here. Of you fifteen dreamers out there, maybe we'll keep one or two. My job is to basically beat the shit out of you for the next five days, and whoever is still standing at the end, maybe we'll use for our scout teams. You'll be running the opposition's plays, week in and week out. Your greatest value to us is we don't care whether you get hurt. Like what you hear so far? Any of you want to run home to momma? Now's your chance. No? [to other coach] Joe, they're all yours.
