Rosemère is a unique and beautiful town with a character and substance that sets it quite apart from others. The town was carved from out of forest and farm land cultivated by early settlers and lies picturesquely in the foothills of the Laurentian mountains in Quebec. Taken from "ROSEMERE, the town that says welcome" printed in 1964. Rosemère was first settled in 1714, with the establishment of the Mille-Îles Seigneury. Ville de Rosemère history page By 1780 the Seigneury was well established, with large tracts of land under cultivation. Rosemère was named by J.P. Withers, of the Canadian Pacific Railway, who moved to the area in 1880. At first he called his new home "Rose", after the many wild roses growing there. Later he added "mere" an old Anglo Saxon word for swamp. Ville de Rosemère history page In typical Canadian fashion the name has become bilingual.
