[edit] quotes

The article attributes -- "I have never seen anything fill up a vacuum so fast and still suck." Well, Henry Spencer was saying something very similar to this about 20 years ago. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Geo Swan (talkcontribs) .

None of the quotes have references. This is something that should be addressed at some point. -- Gnetwerker 21:31, 14 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] vacuum

  • "Sometimes when you fill a vacuum, it still sucks." - on the X Window System

In a google search[1], this is attributed to Pike, Dennis Ritchie, Bill Joy, and others. It is here until someone can provide a reasonably definitive reference. -- Gnetwerker 21:35, 14 March 2006 (UTC)

I have seen Rob introduced at talks with this quote as a leading joke, which was not refuted. So I actually emailed Rob and asked him, and he confirmed that he did indeed say it (quote) "in the Unix room at Bell Labs with a sizeable audience". I am adding back in. -- Ianw

Well, all you need is a verifiable secondary source, then. -- Gnetwerker 07:14, 23 May 2006 (UTC)
Please, don't systematically delete all quotes you don't agree with, most of those quotes are taken from the Plan 9 fortunes file or 9fans posts (bother to check the comments made when the quotes were added). Also nowhere have I seen a requirement that all quotes be sourced, and most quotes in other pages are not sourced, if you have an issue with any specific quote, feel free to point it out. Still, probably most of the quotes should probably be moved to wikiquote, feel free to do that if you like. Lost Goblin 16:30, 23 May 2006 (UTC)
BTW, all those quotes are verifiable (as lanw showed for example); as far as I know there is no requirement for secondary sources for every quote. Lost Goblin 16:36, 23 May 2006 (UTC)
Actually, WP:VERIFY and WP:NOR strongly oppose emailing Rob Pike and asking him if they are his quotes and then using it to back up their inclusion in the article. Also, most of the references you've supplied are not from reliable sources. The first quote, for example, is a link to a google groups search for the quote... perhaps you could explain how that meets WP:VERIFY? Most of the others are links to a fortune cookie file -- again, could you please justify that with reference to WP:VERIFY. Reliable sources are very important in Wikipedia because, well, anyone could set up a website, fill it with claims or malicious gossip and then insert that information here, claiming that it should be included as a "source". Naturally, such situations need to be avoided... particularly in biographical articles, see WP:BLP. The article would really benefit from reliable third party sources. He must have done magazine interviews, for example?
Some of the facts in the article seem unreferenced too. I rather like the Penn and Teller bit, it adds colour, but it needs to be sourced properly. The joke regarding the Olympics really isn't suitable for a Wikipedia biography. Pike is a fairly well-known figure with a long list of accomplishments in computer science. We don't have to fall back on such trivia, surely? It would be nice if we could use WP:FOOTNOTES to do inline citations for the facts, but obviously not essential.
In addition, you might like to consider moving the list of quotes to Wikiquote and then using the Wikiquote template to link to it, as seems to be a common practise. Thanks. - Motor (talk) 22:49, 27 May 2006 (UTC)
If you read what I said, I agree (most of?) the quotes should be moved to Wikiquote, feel free to do so (I'm not even registered in wikiquote). I don't agree on your take on WP:VERIFY, except the case of the first quote, which is widely attributed to him since as far back as 1992 (which is what I tried to show). I would think that the Plan 9 fortunes file, which is edited by the developers at Unix Room is a source as reliable as you will ever find on this subject. As for the rest of the article, I agree it should be completely rewritten, if I recall correctly things like the archery medal were (some incorrectly) taken directly from his home page at some point (not by me, I only tried to corrected it). --Lost Goblin 23:12, 27 May 2006 (UTC)

Yes, you did mention that. I added the wikiquote bit on the end at the last minute. Apologies. Still, regarding WP:VERIFY and WP:RS -- Posts to bulletin boards and Usenet, wikis or messages left on blogs, are never acceptable as primary or secondary sources.google groups.. The same applies to a fortunes file. I'm not going to make a big deal out of it, or remove them myself since quotes are fairly trivial things... but I felt it necessary to clarify Wikipedia's stance with regard to original research, reliable sources and the like. Lots of articles on Wikipedia seem to be subjected to endless streams of blogs, personal websites and google groups posts being used to justify some ridicluous claims. Though this article has been spared such nonsense, thankfully. - Motor (talk) 23:30, 27 May 2006 (UTC)
By the way, the olympic medal issue might be worth keeping because his homepage still says "was until 2002 also a Member of Technical Staff at Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, New Jersey, where he had been since 1980, the same year he won the Olympic silver medal in Archery." which is a common source of confusion as people often take it seriously :) --Lost Goblin 15:48, 7 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Roman numberals

  • "Object-oriented design is the roman numerals of computing." - in 9fans

Cannot find a single reference to this attributed to Pike. -- Gnetwerker 21:38, 14 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Olympics

From the text:

It is often claimed that Pike won the 1980 Olympic silver medal in Archery; however, this is untrue. The United States boycotted the 1980 Summer Olympics. Pike, a Canadian citizen, currently works for Google.

Just a curiosity. If Pike is a Canadian citizen, then who cares if US boycotted the Olympics? Not being an US citezen, he could have won that silver medal. Did he? Or I am missing something? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 80.22.59.4 (talk • contribs) .

Canada also boycotted the 1980 olympics, I clarified that in the page now Lost Goblin 16:37, 23 January 2006 (UTC)
