[edit] Jitse Niesen

[Final (29/0/0) ending 16:33 August 19, 2005 (UTC)

Jitse Niesen (talk contribs) - Some of us have been bugging Jitse to let us nominate him for awhile now, I am glad to say he has finally relented. Jitse is a post-doc in the mathematics department at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh Scotland. Jitse has been an editor on Wikipedia since July 2003. According to Kate, he has made 2326 total edits, with 1415 main space edits. He has been a solid contributer to the mathematics content on Wikipedia. He is an active participant in the Wikipedia:WikiProject Mathematics (for example see this wonderful page he created and maintains: Mathematics: Current activity). He is also a significant contributor to the PlanetMath Exchange project. He is well-liked and respected by the Wikipedian mathematics community. I have also noticed his excellent work at Srebrenica massacre and Talk:Srebrenica massacre, where I think he has shown excellent conflict resolution skills, in what is of course an extremely emotional and difficult subject. He has also been a calm and thoughtful contributer to VfD (a rare thing these days). In short I think he will make an excellent administrator. It is a pleasure to nominate him. --Paul August 16:33, August 12, 2005 (UTC)

Thank you, Paul. I humbly accept the nomination. -- Jitse Niesen (talk) 17:37, 12 August 2005 (UTC)

Questions for the candidate
A few generic questions to provide guidance for voters:

1. What sysop chores, if any, would you anticipate helping with? (Please read the page about administrators and the administrators' reading list.)
A. Mainly administrative things: closing debates at VfD, CfD, IfD, etc. and doing Requested Moves which has a bit of a backlog at the moment. I am rarely manning the first line of defence against vandalism, preferring to watch for vandalism of mathematical articles where I can use my specialistic knowledge, and as such I have not that much experience with the kind of persistent and juvenile vandalism requiring blocks and protecting. Therefore, I intend not to protect pages or block users, at least in the first instance. I noticed that most candidates mention the rollback feature as a reason for applying for adminship; this is not a big incentive for me as it results in unhelpful edit summaries, and I could probably program it in Javascript myself if I really wanted it (I have already brought the number of clicks for reverting back from three to two).
2. Of your articles or contributions to Wikipedia, are there any about which you are particularly pleased, and why?
A. I am quite happy with root-finding algorithm and the articles describing the individual algorithms. I am still proud of my very first edit. Lately, I have been going over the linear algebra articles and comparing them with PlanetMath, as described in this log. As somebody who likes the geometric part of mathematics, I have been adding some pictures like the one on Schwarz-Christoffel transformation. For evidence of activities beyond the editing of articles, I can point to the current activity page mentioned by Paul and m:Blahtex/How to make MathML work in MediaWiki (which is very much in its infancy).
3. Have you been in any conflicts over editing in the past or do you feel other users have caused you stress? How have you dealt with it and how will you deal with it in the future?
A. I have not experienced much stress, partly because I don't easily get stressed and I am quite patient (the best piece of advice I have read — I forgot where — is that it is no disaster if one article is not perfect for a while, hence I sometimes wait a week and then revert). However, the main reason is probably that most of my activities is restricted to the mathematics articles. Most of the times, mathematics arouses few emotions and it clear whether something is true or false (though neither of these statements hold in full generality), so there is not much conflict. I do get a fair share of conflict from Srebrenica massacre, but that's just one article and I have had little problems handling the stress caused by it.
