The story involves the murder of one of a set of identical twins, Regina and Renata. The twins are so identical that, with their infant footprint records being lost by the hospital, no one, not even their parents are ever quite sure which of the twins is which. Thus, when one of the twins is raped and killed, the authorities simply assume that it was the 'dominant' one: Regina. After years of psychotherapy, the surviving twin, who everyone believes is Renata, tries to lead a normal life and attends a college that a family friend, and surrogate big brother to the twins, Mark, attends and teaches at. As Mark juggles his own course schedule and watching Renata, whom he affectionately refers to as Twinkie or Twink, a series of murders of petty criminals begin occurring and Mark and his friends (Sylvia, Erika, Trish, James, and Charlie) eventually realize that the murders are the result of the surviving twin hunting down the murderer of her sister. After successfully finding and killing her sister's murderer, she has a complete psychological breakdown, seemingly not knowing who or where she is and speaking exclusively in a secret language (Cryptolalia) that the twins had invented when they were young. Instead of being taken to the police and being put through more emotional trauma, she is stealthily placed into the care of a secretive abbey for the rest of her life.
