The RealNetworks Public Source License (RPSL) is a software license. The Open Source Initiative (OSI) approved the RPSL as an open source license.
The RPSL is used by the Helix project.
Reason the license was written: The RealNetworks wrote this license. It is used for any program or other works including their derivative works which RealNetworks or any other entity granted to use the license. The license pursues that any program or any works from the RealNetworks will be widely used. However, because the RealNetworks is commercial company, the license prohibits any use except for personal use.
Compatibility with the GPL: Yes. The license is listing compatible source licenses in Exhibit B. One of them is the GPL.
Derivative Works: As derivative works, the license is including the Covered Code or any derivative work under United States copyright law, and including any work containing or including any portion of the Covered Code or Modifications, either verbatim or with modifications and/or translated into another language. Derivative Work also includes any work which combines any portion of Covered Code or Modifications with code not otherwise governed by the terms of this License.
Covered Works: An individual or a legal entity exercising rights under the license must make source code of all his externally deployed modifications publicly available under the terms of this License for as long as he deploys the covered code or twelve months from the date of initial Deployment, whichever is longer. He should preferably distribute the source code of his deployed modifications electronically (e.g. download from a web site).
Charging money for the programs under the license: An individual or a legal entity exercising rights under the license may choose to offer, and to charge a fee for, warranty, support, indemnity or liability obligations and/or other rights consistent with the scope of the license granted herein to one or more recipients of covered code. However, he may do so only on his own behalf and as his sole responsibility, and not on behalf of Licensor or any Contributor. He must obtain the recipient's agreement that any such Additional Terms are offered by him alone, and he hereby agree to indemnify, defend and hold Licensor and every Contributor harmless for any liability incurred by or claims asserted against Licensor or such Contributor by reason of any such Additional Terms.
Including a copy of the license: An individual or a legal entity exercising rights under the license must include a copy of this license with every copy of source code of covered code and documentation he distribute, and he may not offer or impose any terms on such source code that alter or restrict this License or the recipients' rights hereunder.
Adding to the license: It is not mentioned whether any additional requirements or restrictions can be added to the existing license.
Distribution under the license: The license requires that an individual or a legal entity exercising rights under the license grants to Licensor and its subsidiaries a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free, perpetual and irrevocable license, under his applicable patent rights and other intellectual property rights owned or controlled by him, to make, use, sell, offer for sale, import, reproduce, display, perform, distribute, modify or have modified (for Licensor and/or its subsidiaries), sublicense and distribute him modifications, in any form and for any purpose, through multiple tiers of distribution.
Other Relevant Aspects: There is no peculiar difference between the license and other licenses because the license is listing compatible source licenses in section Exhibit B.
