Rancid is an album by a band of the same name released on August 1, 2000. It was their second self-titled album (see Rancid (1993 album) for the other). It is Rancid's most hardcore offering to date, which was released as a follow up to the more ska and reggae oriented Life Won't Wait. It spans 22 tracks in under 40 minutes, resulting in over 2/3 of the songs being under 2 minutes. Songs on the album make reference to famous gangster Al Capone, as well as Norse God Loki, and Don Giovanni. The album is also commonly referred to as "Rancid 5" or "Rancid 2000."
The band took a very different approach to the recording process of this album. The album was recorded 'live' in the studio, that is, all the musicians performed at the same time, even recording the vocals simultaneously with the music. Moreover, they recorded the entire album at once; rather than repeating each song over and over until they got it perfect, the band played the entire album beginning to end four times, and then kept the best overall take. The resulting effect is that this album has a very raw and energetic sound that would be difficult, if not impossible, to reproduce using conventional studio techniques.
