Quiz Kids (San Francisco)

In 1999, Peninsula TV Cable 26 (aka "Pen-TV"), a TV station in the San Francisco Bay Area, introduced Quiz Kids, hosted by Brad Friedman, the Head of the Drama department at San Mateo High School. Schools compete in various categories (literature, history, the arts, sports, pop culture, geography, math, science, current events). Each school sends a three-person team to compete, and the show has three rounds: collaboration, lightning and extreme lightning. In the collaboration round, three team members work together to answer the question, but if they get it wrong, the other team can steal it and get ten points. Friedman interviews the players on college plans, sports and other activities. In the lightning round, players buzz to answer individually. If they get it wrong, the other team can collaborate for ten points. During the extreme round, game play is the same yet answers are worth 20 points. The winning team advances to another round. The show ended its seventh season on March 17, 2006, with 45 Bay Area teams competing. Menlo-Atherton High School won the first four years with Half Moon Bay, Mission San Jose and Bentley following. The first prize is an all-expense paid trip through ACIS. The second place prize, as of the 5th season, has been $1000 per student provided by the Commandry 16 of the Knights Templar and the Golden Gate Division of the Scottish Rite of Free Masonry. The show is sponsored by the San Mateo Credit Union, the Chronicle, AT&T, Oracle and ACIS. The show airs on KRON-4 Saturdays at 2pm. With a free admission, audiences can attend shows at the Peninsula TV Studio (1250 San Carlos Ave, San Carlos, California 94070).
The show is produced by Robert Marks and Elizabeth LaPorte. The show is Directed by Jim Risinger. Frank Seebode has been the show's long standing question judge. Bay Area Quiz Bowl organizer Ross Ritterman has served as question writer/editor and show consultant since Season 6 and will serve as Associate Producer beginning with Season 8. As of Season 8, question material is provided by NAQT.
