Queen's College Lagos

Situated in Yaba, Lagos, Nigeria, Queen's College Lagos is often referred to as the "Sister College" of King's College, Lagos. Founded in 1927, it is a large government-owned girl's secondary (high) school with boarding facilities. There are six forms which are equivalent to the American 7th grades through 12th grades. Each form contains about 600 students divided into several arms, making the total population of the school roughly 4000. Because it is government-owned, school fees are relatively affordable. The motto is "Pass On The Torch."

There is a school song and a school prayer.

THE SCHOOL SONG

Pass on the torch still brightly gleaming,

Pass on the hopes, the earnest dreaming

To those who follow close at hand.

Pass on the thoughts, the skills, the learning;

Pass on the secret in most yearning

That they may build where we have planned.

Pass on the songs, pass on the laughter,

THE SCHOOL PRAYER

O Lord, by whose manifold grace,

All things work together for good to them that love Thee.

Establish, we pray Thee the things that Thou has wrought in us

And make this school a field which the Lord has blessed.

That whatsoever things are true, pure, lovely and of good report

May here forever flourish and abound.

Preserve in it an unblemished name,

Enlarge it with a wider usefulness,

And exalt it with the love and reverence of all its members

As an instrument of Thy glory.

The school is known universally for its outstanding and brilliant students who often excel in their chosen careers. Queen's College has produced quite a number of notable alumni.

The students are required to wear a uniform. For classes, the uniform is a blue checkered blouse and navy blue skirt, for seniors, and a navy blue pinafore, for juniors, and a blue beret with the QC logo on it. This uniform has changed several times since the College's inception, and the one described here is the most recent one.

A schedule of a QC boarder goes somewhat like this:

5:30am -Rising bell
7:00am -Breakfast
8:00am -Morning Assembly
8:40am -Morning classes begin

11:30am -Break time 12:00pm -Afternoon classes

2:40pm -Classes are over; lunch time
3:15pm -Compulsory rest (siesta)
4:30pm -Afternoon prep
5:30pm -Sports
6:30pm -Dinner
7:15pm -Night prep
9:30pm -Lights out for juniors

10:30pm -Lights out for seniors
