Purwokerto

Purwokerto is a city in the Central Java region of Indonesia. The town is known for its food, particularly keripik, mendoan and ranjem. The city is bisected by a river, the Kali Kranji, and there are two main East-West roads, named Jalan Sudirman and Jalan Gatot Subroto.

[edit] Place of Interest
The interesting place is the center of Purwokerto, a wide open space called Alun-alun with 6 (six) bayan trees. Four bayan trees on its corners, and two in the central Alun-alun. The Purwokertonian usually enjoy their leisure in Alun-alun for child to play. Several dwellers selling children toys and hawkers food. Alun-alun is located in front of Kabupaten, the regional government building. Similar with other Javanese town, to the west of Alun-alun is Masjid Baitussalam.
Just east of Alun-alun, you can see the old lonely cemetery in the middle of Ragasemangsang road. There are several spooky story regarding this cemetery.
The interesting place to see is Baturaden, located 15 km north of Purwokerto. Baturaden is a classical highland country in the foot of Gunung Slamet volcano. Baturaden is renowned for local tourism, with attraction of children play ground, hot spring, trekking and camping. There are two natural hotspring in Baturaden, namely Pancuran Telu and Pancuran Pitu. The camping ground is called Wana Wisata. There are also some hotel, villa and budget hotel available in Baturaden. The prostitution or sex trading also available in Baturaden, commonly behind the bus station.

Purwokerto is renowned for its local exotic. In the morning, you can find serabi seller almost on every corner of town. The famous serabi seller is in Jalan Bank, you have to queue to enjoy their serabi. The serabi seller will giving you out the queue number, and will call you when your serabi is ready. Serabi is a round food thingy with coconut and red sugar.
Another Purwokerto delicacy is soto. The conventional soto seller is gathered in Sokaraja, known for its Soto Sokaraja. Sokaraja is located to the east of Purwokerto. The best Soto Sokaraja seller is Asli shop. There are also several soto restaurant or dweller in Purwokerto. The famous one is Soto Jalan Bank, obviously located in Jalan Bank. Another tasty soto is Soto Ani, located behind the shop-row east of PLN Building, east of alun-alun.
Otherwise at Sokaraja we also found famous food called Gethuk Goreng that many shop sell it with different kind of name. It made of cassava and a lot of javanesse sugar. And the other food : nopia, mino (small nopia) kripik, and also mendoan.

The main government hospital is located on the eastern edge of the town, called RS (abbreviation of Rumah Sakit) Margono Soekarjo. This name taken from the first surgery in Indonesia who was born and died in Purwokerto. His rested place located in Pesarean Kebutuh, Sokaraja Kulon. There several clinics spread in the town.

The major university in town is Universitas Jendral Sudirman, located in the northern fringe of Purwokerto. The SMP Kristen 1 Secondary School is located along Jalan Jendral Gatot Subroto no 92. Jalan Gatot Subroto is parallel and located north to Jalan Sudirman, where the SMA Negeri 1 and SMA Kristen (High School) located. Both school was built by Dutch Government during colonial. There several colleges and university in Purwokerto. Because of it Purwokerto became one of education city in Java.
