A professional dominant or professional dominatrix is a person who performs the dominant role in BDSM activities in exchange for money. Most professional dominants do not have sex in exchange for money, and do not regard themselves as prostitutes.

A female dominant is known as a dominatrix (plural dominatrices), and the term is often used as a synonym for a female professional dominant. A pro domme is another term used for a female professional dominant.

Most professional dominants are female, as most customers of professional dominants are submissive males who choose to be dominated by a member of the opposite sex. However, there are also male professional dominants serving gay or bisexual men, and women can also be customers of male or female professional dominants.

A professional dominant may either work by themselves (often with a maid or minder present) or in an establishment with other professional dominants and/or professional submissives. Professional dominants advertise in specialist contact magazines, as well as on the Web; there are a number of Web-based directories for professional dominants.

The rates charged by professional dominatrices vary depending on geographic location, skill and experience level, fame and reputation, activities requested by the client and physical appearance. Dominatrices who have appeared in female domination videos tend to be well-known and can, therefore, command higher fees. In London, most pro-dominatrices with their own facilities for in-calls charge between £150 and £200 per hour, potentially making it a lucrative profession, although there are high overheads associated with the large amount of equipment and space needed by a well-equipped professional dominant. Typical session fees range from $100 to $350 per hour in the United States, making them comparable to fees charged by attorneys. Depending on the region of the United States, some dominatrices will set a flat fee or tribute, based on the complexity of the visit, with a time limit. This is common in areas like Wyoming and Colorado.

Most professional dominatrices do not consider themselves to be prostitutes. The slogan "domination is not prostitution" is displayed on the web sites of many professional dominatrices.

Professional dominatrices differ from other women in the sex industry in that they come in all shapes and sizes and ages, while most other sex workers tend to be young and slender. There are professional dominatrices who are heavier and in their 40s, 50s or even 60s.
