Princes Hill Secondary College (PHSC) is a state high school located in the suburb of Princes Hill, in the north western corner of Carlton North in Melbourne, Australia. The campus is situated on Arnold St, between Paterson and Richardson Streets, and lies in proximity to Princes Park and Optus Oval. The park grounds are used as the school playground, and also serve as handy sporting facilities. Princes Hill Secondary College has approximately 800 students through years 7 to 12, and an inherent multiculturalism is reflected through not only the students - but the staff as well. PHSC has recently received government funds to extend several key areas of the school's faculties - VCE classroms as well as textiles, home economics (food), music, the school gymnasium and a set of sustainable science classrooms as part of the Leading Schools Initiative.

[edit] School structure
The school teaches Years 7 to 12, and splits these 6 levels into 3 sub-schools; Junior School (Years 7 & 8), Middle School (Years 9 & 10) and VCE (Years 11 & 12). While Princes Hill SC does have houses, these are only used for organising teams in school sporting events, such as the annual swimming sports and athletics days, and are determined by the homegroup a student is in. Since these homegroups often change between years or change letters, the houses have no lasting significance.
[edit] A brief history
In the beginning, Princes Hill Secondary College was the sixth school to be opened in Carlton and was originally a primary school. The inauguration was held on the 2nd of September in 1889: State School 2955, Princes Hill. It remained with little change as a primary school, and in 1924 another school, this time one made for infants was constructed within 5 minutes walk of the primary school, on Pigdon Street. In 1959, the primary school became the high school, and the infant school became the primary, and it remained this way until the new high school was gutted by fire in 1970. During this time the campus became spread over a vast amount of Princes Hill to cope with the amount of students left without classrooms, including areas of Princes Park. It was not until 1973 that a new building had replaced the burnt ruins of its predecessor. This was named Princes Hill Secondary College, and was considerably larger than before, after the half-closure of arnold street to accommodate the new campus. More recently there have been several additions to the college in the form of a new building to accommodate extra VCE students, and new gymnasium (currently under construction), the creation of a new science department, developed with a theme of sustainability as part of the Leading Schools Initiative and the total revamp of the music department.
