"Preemptive Strike" is a seventh season episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation, which wound up the plotline involving the character of Ro Laren.
Starfleet assigns Ro to be a spy for the Maquis (Maquis: A group made up primarily of former Starfleet officers who live on or near the borders of Cardassia; a paramilitary defense group, that resists the Cardassians' designs for the Federation colonies that are now on the Cardassian side of the border) which the Federation and Cardassians believe is growing too strong and powerful, for they are begging to attack the Cardassians. Ro is a successful spy for a while but after the Cardassians attacked a Maquis base and kills the Maquis leader (on to whom she thought of as much as father to her as Picard), she decides to quit Starfleet and give up on her promising career. She says goodbye to Captain Picard and becomes a member of the Maquis.
