Poqueira River

The Río Poqueira is a river in La Alpujarra region in the province of Granada, in the community of Andalucía, Spain. It is formed from a confluence of streams that rise near the summit of Mulhacén, the highest peak of the Sierra Nevada mountains, and flows south. Near the confluence is a hydro-electric station, and the associated abandoned settlement of La Cebadilla, built to house the workers who constructed the installation. The ruiver cuts through a dramatic gorge, to the east side of which cling the three villages of Capileira, Bubión and Pampaneira which have become noted tourist attractions. At Pampaneira, near the bridge by which the main road from Órgiva and Lanjarón crosses the river, is a further hydro-electric installation. South of Pampaneira the Río Poqueira joins the Río Trevélez shortly before flowing into the Río Guadalfeo.
