Plumpton, New South Wales

Plumpton is a suburb in the City of Blacktown, in Western Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia.

The area was initially known as Woodstock, but when a Post Office was established in 1889, there was confusion over this Woodstock and a railway station on the Blayney-Harden line, also called Woodstock. Walter Lamb (1825-1906) established a fruit preserving works and a coursing (type of greyhound race) track on his property Woodstock. Coursing in England was conducted at Plumpton, so that name replaced Woodstock.

Plumpton is located nearby to the suburb of Mount Druitt which provides many of the services which are not available directly within Plumpton.

Within Plumpton there is a significant shopping complex, Plumpton Marketplace, which is home to a medical clinic, betting agency, supermarket, several discount outlets, banking, fashion, fast food and other retail outlets.

Plumpton Primary School and Plumpton High School are located adjacent to each other. Plumpton High School is notable for its programs aimed at encouraging teenaged girls to remain at school throughout and following pregnancy should they become pregnant while still at school. While these programs grew from the needs of local students the programs have become well known and frequently young mothers from across Western Sydney wishing to continue schooling transfer to Plumpton High. There are two church-operated schools in Plumpton, The Good Shepherd Primary School and Richard Johnson Anglican School.

Plumpton is readily accessed from the Westlink M7 and M4 Motorways. Westbus and Busways provide connecting bus services to Rooty Hill, Mount Druitt and St Marys railway stations.
